My DNS-323 worked as expected for many months but has now begun to fail shortly after powerup.

Upon initial startup it works, showing up in both Windows My Network Places and as a mapped drive.  Upon initial powerup the various folders and files are accessible but I can hear the drives spinning / see the drive activity lights so it is obviously performing some sort of directory read or surface validation.  When this activity completes the two drive lights on the unit change from blue to pink and the unit is no longer accessible.

It is configured as a raid 1 array and am running firmware 1.06.
I have not enabled Auto-rebuild of the raid array.
I am using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3.
It includes two Western Digital 250G drives - WD2500AAKS-00VYA

What is the recommended approach to resolve?  I assume I could activate Auto-Rebuild and insert a replacement drive but is there a simpler diagnostic or recovery test I should perform first?

Thanks in advance.

I'd reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure.  You won't lose the data, and that may get it's mind right.
