I've had a DIR-655 for a little more than a year now. During the latter half of this time, I've repeatedly had this issue with the wireless signal. During fairly random certain times of the day, the wireless will be extremely slow. It will be pingable from every machine, but may be anywhere from 10ms to 10,000ms in ping. As can be expected, the transfer of files and reception of internet during these times is also very slow, and online games become impossible. At other times, the signal will be perfect, as will the download speeds, and the wireless ping will be an average of 0.4ms. However, all the time, my wired ethernet machine will still have its constant ping of 0.2ms, as will any wireless machines that connect via ethernet cables.

I have followed D-link's advice and tried endless combinations of changing the channel. DNS relay is disabled. But now that 1 year has passed, I'm out of warranty.  I have a log, which I will post below. If there is a better way to post it I will do so (extremely long). Below is barely a 10th of the log over the past day. The latest activity in this log happened during a spasm of poor wireless signal. Name of DIR-655 is "sanctus".

So it's a day later, and as of yet no help, with 65 views. Do you need more information? This problem drives me crazy every single day. I can't play online games, or even write emails knowing that my wireless will work.

I had a similar DIR-655 log file this morning, although symptoms were different.  But, I suspect it's caused by the same thing.

Setup: DIR-655 with DWA-140 USB wireless adapter (Ralink's latest drivers) on a Vista 64-bit PC.  PC is right next to the microwave.  Usually it's no problem, although things can slow down when the microwave is running.

But, this morning I booted the PC and logged in while the microwave was running.  It couldn't connect, not surprisingly.  However, even after the microwave shut off it STILL couldn't connect.  I looked at the router log - which had entries like yours (lots of "disconnected for reason: Authentication Failed").  Rebooted the router - PC STILL couldn't connect.  Logged the user off the PC and back in again - No good.  Finally, rebooted the PC, after which it connected immediately.

I took a look at Vista's Event log for the time period.  What stood out was Vista thought that the wireless authentication failed - over and over again.  It's like it was confused and stuck in a bad state or something.

I googled the log entries and it seems other people have similar problems.  Didn't find anything that seems to apply to my case, though.

Things I did change, though:

Noticed in Vista's Network Connections that my one automatic connection wasn't at the top of the list - changed that, all manual connections are now below it.

Disabled more stuff I really don't need in the DIR-655:

    ADVANCED, QOS ENGINE:

        Dynamic Fragmentation : UNchecked

    ADVANCED, ADVANCED WIRELESS:

        Short GI : UNchecked

        Extra Wireless Protection : UNchecked

    ADVANCED, WI-FI PROTECTED SETUP:

However, I feel the problem is on the PC side.  I think it has something to do with the PC trying to use the network connection before it's authenticated or applying the wrong authentication.

Two things that didn't apply to me but you might try are: 1) Reduce or eliminate power save modes on PC's WiFi adapter, 2) Reduce "roaming tendency" of the WiFi adapter so it doesn't try to switch to another signal.

The problem is, I get this issue with all wireless devices on the house. 3 macs, 3 PC's, even one iPod touch. They alternate between perfect signal and speed, to a speed so slow it might as well be dead.

I am in a suburban area, with a lot of wireless routers around. However, on channel 1, my bandwidth is surprisingly free. 5.8Ghz wireless phones. Microwave is very near router, but is not always on, and the issue can happen at any time.

I get the same thing happening and usually I have to go round and reboot everything. Happening since last firmware. I have recently switched to WPA-2 AES only from WES and the frequency of this happening has gone from days to hours.

Maybe you are onto something here and the problems we are all having might have to do with authentication. Sorry you haven't got more replies but thanks for posting as it increases the chances we might find a solution at the end of this horrendous saga.

I live in Turkey and occasionally run into the same Shareport problem.
The electricity is not as stable as we have a lot of voltage-fluctuations and I noticed that when the light dimms for a brief period, thıs happens also, sometimes I even get de-authentication messages and retarts at that time. No wonder in my case the ac power supplied is the cause. I did run my comptersystem on a no-break powersupply for 2 weeks to test and everything ran without shareport problems and without any other trouble.
Since not everybody has the problem I think there might be a small chance that failing power supplies are the root of the problem.
