Slow Data Transfers Over LAN
« on: October 05, 2009, 02:14:25 PM »

I installed a DWA-552 card to replace a defective Syslink adaptor that could no longer connect to the Internet.  My router is a Syslink WRT300n and I am able to achieve 120Mbps connection speed which is acceptable for the time being.  However, transfering large files from different partitions on my network hard drive is now painfully slow, typically < 450Kbps vs the 2.5-3Mbps I was seeing with the old adapter card.

I'm using Windows Vista Business edition and I realize this is an old problem within the OS, but Microsoft seems to have fixed it with their latest service packs.  The issue here seems related to the 552 card in that the file transfer rate dropped dramatically after I installed it.   I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers, v1.50 with no noticeable improvement in performance.

Does anyone have some ideas how to fix this problem?

Hi Yogi,

The connection speed of 300 mbps is guaranteed by D-Link when used with its matching Router of the D-Link DIR-655 Router.

D-Link doesn't guarantee any connection speed, when not used with an Adapter's matching device.

I can tell you how to achieve its 300 mbps speed, but that comes from the settings within the D-Link DIR-655 Router and not its Adapter.

See the D-Link Sticky for achieving 300 mbps in this forum.

I'm not concerned about the data transfer rate off the Internet, which by the way, I was able to achieve the full 300MBps eventually.  The problem I'm experiencing is data transfers over my LAN.  When moving files from one partition on my (NetGear) network drive to another, the transfer rate hovers around 250Kbps instead of the 3Mbps I was getting with my old Linksys card.  I also have a laptop with an Intel wireless card and can achieve the 3Mbps I was getting before. Plus, the ethernet card in my system has no problem either.  All this tells me is that my router is doing what it should do.  The degradation started after I installed the D-Link card.

Apparently D-Link does not have a solution for this problem.  I called the live tech support phone and was told to upgrade to the latest drivers.  Unfortunately the problem still exists after that. I was also reminded by them about the lack of specs when not using D-Link products from end to end.

Hi Yogi,

Are you talking NetGear's Storage Central Unit SC-101 or Sc-101T? How do you determine the speed of 250Kbps or 3 Mbps? Where are you looking for that information?

Yes, I'm talking about the SC-101 and am using a sniffer for the measurements: Networx  http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/  Even if the numbers I gather are not totally accurate the time it takes to transfer a 65MB file is in the area of 20 minutes vs the few seconds I can do with the ethernet card or the old wireless card.

Hi Yogi,

I also have a NetGear SC-101 Unit. I also have a matching D-Link DIR-655 Unit for the DWA-552 Card. I have not set up SC-101 in Raid configuration but using two Hard Drives that I partitioned. Since I went high speed with the D-Link Router, I was finding that the time it took to transfer a TV Program was way too long, because it had been starting and stopping and time remaining was constantly changing. So what I did was to limit the internal transmission rate of the Router to match the speed of the NetGear Unit and it worked just fine. I limited the internal speed to MCS11-52 [108] (Mbit/s).

Try limiting the Internal Speed of your Router in its Wireless Settings.

i am having the same problems.  i cant copy anything from my wireless pc to my wired.  500mb took 4 hrs or so... then it kept dropping completely and id get the message the system was unable to finish transferring the file bla bla click "try again" so i had to keep clicking that for ~45 minutes to finish the last 10-15mb.  my speeds hover around 300kbps/sec transfer rate.

tdean: Your situation is similar to mine in that you are attempting data transfers over a LAN, but the devices you are using are different.  I'm trying to transfer data located on a network drive that is hard wired to the router.  The router and the drive are likely suspects to cause the problem along with the network adapter card in my desktop computer - not to mention Vista itself.  Given all the variables, troubleshooting becomes a large PITA.

In the end I got rid of the D-Link DWA-552 card and replaced it with a new Linksys card identical to the old one.  Transfer rates over the LAN immediately resumed it's 4mbps speed, which is the good news.  However, the bad news is that the network card is recognized only half the time by Vista.  Even when it's recognized as existing in my system, it makes the Internet connection only about half of those times.

I am convinced that at least part of my problems are Vista related, but the D-Link adapter card was a consistent problem.  Since I've experienced all this hassle with my network I've installed Linux (Ubuntu) and discovered that the network card comes up every time and connects to the Internet flawlessly.  I returned the D-Link adapter card to the vendor so that I can't say how it performs in the Ubuntu environment.

I had similar problems.  With my PC right next to my DIR-655 router, speed was good and it ran fine.  Took my PC downstairs, where other laptops could connect to the wireless network, and this DWA-552 card could not even see the router.  After trying the card in a couple PC's running Windows XP, and having the same problem, I decided to try another vendor card.  I tried the Linksys Wireless-N PCI adapter, WMP300N, and success at last.  This Linksys adapter even comes with a 5' antenna.  I installed it like the forum's have been suggesting (not using the wizard, but using Device Mgr) and it came up first time, and saw my whole neighborhood.  I don't know what is going on with DWA-552 cards, but it is nice to see there is another vendor's card works.
