My wireless connection has kept dropping INCESSANTLY the last few days.  I know the router is working fine because the other laptop in the house (with a b-connection) works perfectly fine, and if I connected to the modem through a wired connection, it works fine also.  This tells me that it must be either my computer or the Intel 5300 card. 

The connection will go through automatically as always, but then inexplicably, within a few seconds of it being connected, it would drop and then re-start the connection/disconnected routine again...

This is frustrating to no end and I would welcome any advice or to hear if others have experienced the same things with possible solutions....

Did you download and install the latest driver for your Intel from their site ?
This happens also if there is no other client connected ?

Which operating system are you using ?
Which firmware on the DIR ?
Encryption should be WPA2-PSK/AES (might be a problem with the 11b device)

Consider exchanging the 11b card in your second laptop into a new 11N adapter.
(i.e. DWA-140 works fine with the router)

Thanks for the quick reply!  The "Windows Update Driver" tab from the "Properties" tab told me that I have the latest version (August 2008, I think?).  Should I go to Intel site itself to check as well?  The DIR firmware is 1.21 from October 2008.

The thing is, both laptops (including the one with the 11b card) and my laptop had both connected fine for months, and it was only until very recently that my computer keeps dropping the connection while the laptop with the 11b card continues to function normally.  This makes me wonder if maybe my neighbors got some new computer/router/network card that may be causing some interference?  Also, the drops seem to happen in evenings (when I'm home, and presumably so are the neighbors)?  Right now, being past midnight where I am, the connection seems to be a bit stable.....In any event, even if it's b/c of neighbors, why only my computer and not the other laptop with the 11b card? 

This adds to the frustration, since both laptops worked fine before and all of a sudden, mine isn't?

The best thing you can do is to get the latest driver from the intel website.

Yes, download the latest driver from Intel directly.

Sometimes a simple Windows update can cause such problems.

Thanks....will try that when i get home tonight.....sorry for the n00bie questions, but once I get to the intel support page, do I choose "Automatically detect and update drivers and software" or should I browse by product, etc.?  Also, does it make sense to install the Intel Wireless Troubeshooter application (I don't think I currently have that)?

Well, updated to the latest Intel drivers for the 5300 from the Intel Support page.  Unfortunately, nothing has changed.  In fact, when I run the Intel Pro/Wireless tool, and the "Run Test" buttom from the Diagnostics application, sometimes it tells me that the latest Intel drivers are not compatible or something....sigh....

I'm going to try and re-install the 5300 tonight from Device Manager and see if that clears things up?  I will also try to log on to my router/network using a USB adatper key, to see if the 5300 is the culprit (I can't imagine otherwise, but just to check).....if anyone else has any suggestions [short of replacing the 5300 itself, which would suck esp. since I've only had this brand new Dell E6400 for less than a year)!

My Dell E6500 with Intel 5300 card started the same behaviour yesterday, has been working OK for months.  The DIR-655 log says "Wireless system with MAC address ... disconnected for reason: Received Deauthentication" and there are even more frequent new "association messages".

I have no new devices around and the closest neighbor is half a km away, so interference should not be the cause. I removed the profile from the Intel Proset configuration utility and it improved the situation a bit but I still get dropped several times/hour.

Did you get the problem solved, or anybody else have ideas?

I think the router is set to "auto" for channel in the router page (i assume you mean that page I get to at 192.168.....?)  Is this what you mean?

I had changed the 5300 config. to auto (as per the Sticky on this forum re: 300Mbs).  When I do connect, I have seen that it does connect at 300Mbs, so that's not it either....

So on a whim, I uninstalled the 5300 (from the "Config" option) and then rebooted the computer.  On boot up, the computer automatically detected the hardware, I guess, and installed the software.  I then re-connected to the network and the drop was automatic (it kept connecting then in a few seconds, it would drop, then try to automatically connect again, and so on)....

Anyway, I then (on another whim) changed the 5300's advanced settings back to 20Mhz for the 2.4G (keeping it at "Auto" for the 5G) and, knock on wood, it seems to be stable now?

I don't want to jinx myself and I have absolutely no idea why this may have worked (since I had switched it to "Auto" at 2.4G long ago, in accordance with the instructions for the "300Mbs" sticky on this forum).  Nevertheless, as I don't really "need" 300Mbs anyway (not transferring files over the network much), I think I will leave well enough alone and hope that this solution really is it....

Glad to hear it!  It is weird that we have to set opposite settings on the 2.4G to address what seems like the same problem?!
