\\computerIP\c$ remotely?
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:55:08 PM »

I recently got an old computer and hooked it up to my network.  And I have it set up so I can remote desktop just fine.  But what I usually end up using is

\\computerIP\c$ in run to access the files.  I find it more efficient to just load them through the network on my laptop, which is must better then that old desktop.

But I was curious if I could do this remotely.  For isntance if im not on my network, but the old desktop computer is if I could \\olddesktopcomputer\c$?

I have already set up that free dynamic dns thing that was shown in the dlink router.  So since \\ipaddress\c$ works,

shouldnt \\name.dlinkddns.com\c$ work?  If this would in theory work, I would have to know what port something like this uses andd forward it to the old desktop on the DIR-655's virtual server.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Didnt know how else to ask! thanks!

Doing it remotely is a big security risk, File and Printer Sharing on Windows is designed to work only for LAN, you better use VPN for what you want.  But if you really want to do it for the heck of it, then please check your windows firewall or any solution you use, typically they only allow File and Printer Sharing inside the internal network, set it to any network. After that you need to configure port forwarding for ports 445, 137, 138, 139 in your router to the old PC you need to expose.
