need help with router or my kid gets to use the hammer on it
« on: October 09, 2009, 12:38:14 AM »

hello, I have the famous DIR-655 router. On paper it sounds like it was sent by the gods to us mere mortals but in reality it is a plague. I have hw  A4 and firmware 1.20. I have tried opendns, dlinkddns.com. and I have not been able to use my HP deskjet 2350. I have had issues with web pages not showing up and I have tried different NIC`s- Bridged and unbridged. Do I need to update my firmware to the one that DOES NOT HAVE that added secure spot.the file size is smaller. I have changed the log on IP thinking it might be a problem. I am about to take it out and let my 4 year old see how fast she can beat it to death it rightly deserves with a hammer and do what i should have and bought a 8 or 16 port power edge dell switch. the 8 port cost as much as what Alienware sold this little gem for.
So what do I do? Flash or no flash to 1.21. will it solve my printer problems. will I experience reboots and other sorted issues I have heard here. I worked tech support when i was younger and if D link is trying to cut down its consumer base they are doing it with flair.

If you're having difficulty with 1.20, I would go to 1.21.  I say this because when I purchased my DIR-655 just a short time ago, it had 1.21 and the router has been ROCK SOLID for me.  You have to remember though that you always run the risk of making things worse than what they already are.  My router was already factory flashed to 1.21 .... catch my drift?

Hi,

Am assuming you are setting up the router with no wireless (and encryption) for starters...

DSL or Cable internet ?  I have mine set to Dynamic IP as opposed to PPPoE or others....

Disable DNS relay....let your ISP provide your DNS servers...

Enable DHCP for LAN Ip setups...

Did you reboot your ISP modem after connecting it to the DIR-655 ?  THEN power on your DIR....
THEN power on you PCs....

you have stock firmware? 1.01 or 1.10? Definatly upgrade to 1.21 if you have access to that firmware. just do not go any furthar than 1.21 ie the 1.3x series.

I did the changes you suggested as well as changed the router I.P. to 198.162.1.1. I also made sure I have secondary av, firewall, and malware software with no encryption on the Wii and 1 laptop that is used mostly by the kids for netflix movies. the notebook has the same av, firewall and anti malware software. I do not have any draft n devices and changed it to 802.11b &g only. should multicast be enabled? the dlink found my ISP router and automatically filled in the primary and secondary dns and the I.P from my I.P. router as well. I did the reset of the dlink then powered down the modem and dlink and did so after the changes as well. any other suggestions. I am regretting not purchasing the power connect switch by dell 157.00 -it is a few bucks more than what alienware cost was but it didnt have wi-fi but could have purchased a good print server and a wi fi card for my main computer and done ics to the 2 wi-fi devices. I thought going this way would be best instead of having to set up a rack system with switch, firewall, wifi, ect..
thanks for the help and please let me know if i should change something.

Hi,

What make/model of ISP modem do you have ?  You used the word Router to refer to that device...is it a combination modem/router of some sort ?

Let us know....

Oh wow, that's probably your problem right there.  If it is possible with that modem/router combo to disable the router function on the modem.  You most likely have settings on each device (pertaining to router functions) that are conflicting with one another.  Just a thought  ???
