I think the difference is the power brick probably doesn't allow the +5 and +12 to decay at the same rate.  That must affect whatever logic they used to determine that they had a loss of power while operating.  Remember, it has to also handle the situation where the device has been turned off normally, then unplugged and plugged back in.  In that case, I suspect they don't want the NAS to power up automatically.  I know I've done stuff like this with avionics, but I actually had hardware assist designed in to make the job easy.  I'm not sure how they did this in the DNS-321, or what hardware support they had available to determine that they were operating when power was lost.  Since they can't really spin up the disks to decide whether to power up, I suspect they write an "operating" flag to the FLASH when they're running and clear it when they're powered down normally, but that's just a SWAG.

That's a good answer gunrunnerjohn, or at least as good as any I can come up with at the present moment!  ;D

I guess we'll just have to wait for Dlink themselves to clear up our little mystery eh?  :(

I also suspect a flag is set in flash memory.  I don't see how they could do it otherwise.  And the problem why it doesn't work is because they designed it to work with a Special UPS  :o  that pulls out the connector from the NAS during a power failure.  They can charge extra for that special feature.  But I'm not sure how the US can plug it back in for power recovery  :-\.

I'm certain they can correct the problem if they are given the money to do so.  Software development is not free.  Personnaly I think that feature should not be advertised until it's fixed.  My NAS didn't have it when I bought it and I don't need it, however if this feature were fixed, I'd take it.

This will be the last time I post of this topic.  I think the horse is dead.

This is false. All hardware revisions of DNS-321 have the hardware to support auto-power recovery. We only added the option in 1.03 firmware. There is NO configuration for it. Test it out, turn on your 321 and let it boot up. Pull the power plug from the wall. Plug it back in ater a few seconds, did it turn back on? Feature is working as intended.

You guys should get your stories straight.  ::)

Yes, to address this, there is some miscommunication regarding the firmware. The release notes should have stated the same as the DNS-323 which is that this function is only available on the C1 hardware. The web dev description will be updated tomorrow. While the function is in the firmware it is not supported in A1 or B1 hardware.

Scandisk issues:

I've updated to version 1.03 okay, tested some 2TB drives fine too [WD2002FYPS].

However, I replaced my 1TB drives back into the unit and it is working fine [upgraded from 1.02], didn't reformat drives.... but scandisk seems to work fine initially, more info follows.

My drives are setup with 2x 1TB mirrors (2TB total).
Therefore I have volume_1 and volume_2.

A scan of either volume shows progress, then I come back later and find that neither volume is visible and I am at the login screen.  I cannot get the volumes back without rebooting and I cannot see the result of the scandisk operation.

I do have funplug 0.5-4 installed so I can potentially run scandisk there, or other tools -- what is recommended here?

Also, what are the risks of going from 1.02 to 1.03 and NOT to do a full reformat of the volumes?

I made the jump from 1.02 to 1.03 without reformatting, so it's possible, at least in come circumstances. :D  Note that this is a sample of one, so I'd wait for some other opinions. ;)

My two cents:
After you start running scandisk and you come back later to check on it, just try to close the web interface window and try to log on again as admin.  Try to check the scandisk status that way.  I'm thinking the NAS may have logged you out after a few minutes of no user action.

Fun Plug may cause problems with your NAS so I would recommend you back it up, or just move it to disable it and reboot, try again.

I hear you do not need to reformat your drives moving to the newer versions since that would be an EXT2 format.  If you were to format in EXT3 (version 1.03 adds this capability), they you would have to format if you were to return to version 1.02 or older.  This of course is not your situation.

I guess I need to educate myself on the value of scandisk on an EXT2 or 3 formatted drive and if it's needed.

Have you tried to download the file again and update with the new download? Sometimes things happen when doing a download and the file may have been "damaged in transit". Delete the file you have from your thumbdrive, download again and then try the update again, you may have better luck the second time.

No problem Maria, that's what we're all here for, to lend a hand when we can.
