Pro:
So far, after 1 week, the only Pro is the the wired gigabit ethernet works. Default settings kinda sorta work. Updated firmware 1.32NA, that was easy enough.

Con:
Where to start!
First, inital setup is a pain, you have to be connected to port #1 and no other wired ethernet ports must be enabled on your computer, even VMWare virtual network connections. Even after you set up the router, I have to leave VMWare disabled, but this might be a VMWare issue, dunno yet.
Also, I have the Asus P5N32-E MB with 2 gigabit ethernet ports that I use in "combined" mode. Well, the router keeps dropping one of the MAC addresses, which drops my access. I have to un-combine, then re-combine, then it works.
MAC address filtering just does not work correctly, it seems to only hold about 4 MAC addresses, you can add 5 or more, but after a while, they drop out. Then you have to add them again.
And, last night, I must have reset to factory defaults about 10 times before I could get the router to let me have access to it. I don't know what I did to fix it, it just started working.

Other thoughts:
This was reviewed by PCWorld as the #2 draft-N router, that is the reason I bought it, even with the bad reviews I read. I am going to have to rely on the reviews now, instead of PCWorld.

I want to return this "dawg" and get a completely different manufacturers router.

You made a HUGE mistake by updating the router firmware IMHO.   I just recently purchased my DIR-655 and was just about ready to update the firmware when I noticed that it would be impossible to go backward on the versions.  I came here to this forum and looked around a bit (actually it didn't take me long at all), but I saw that practically EVERYONE is having troubles with the newest version of the firmware and so I decided to NOT update.  The router has been rock solid for me using the firmware that was the default when I bought it v1.21.


I'm sorry this doesn't help you any, but you should've came here first and done a little looking around.  I personally would return it.  Just my opinion.

Return it if you can or exchange it for one with 1.21...

Some of us have been waiting since July for Dlink to fix the firmware or release a down rev to 1.21...

Alot of us have given up and bought others to replace ours already...

I am just waiting for a "stable" version of any firmware to come out so I can use it as a secondary now.

The product is good its just the firmware that is "very Iffy"

Yeah, its my fault I didn't read the forums before updating the firmware. I assumed it was better, my fault.
My old Linksys wireless G router works flawlessly, no probs.
So, I just might send it back to newegg, and by a NetGear from Best Buy. But, I'm gonna read the reviews/forums on it before I do.

Oh another thing I forgot to mention/ask. Does this router do 5 Ghz? all the literature says it does 2.4, but not 5.
I've noticed on my Network Connection, that I have 65 Mps connection. I am connected to an Intel 5100 internal wireless card.
Isn't it supposed to be closer to the theorhetical limit of 300 Mps? or will that only happen with D-Link adapters?
Has anyone else seen this speed? Do you know how I can connect at at higher Mps (the WHOLE reason I bought a wireless N router, because of large file transfers)

I get 300, you have to have a N card that is capable, and the router has to be set to wpa2.

I have a The Intel® WiFi Link 5100 Series in my Asus G51Vx-X2A, which is a wireless N card.

How do you set it for just WPA2? I saw a setting, somewhere, for "WPA or WPA2", I think it is called "WPA-Personal", Should I set it to WPA Only (page 67 of the manual)?

Hi,

If your wireless adapter can't do WPA2 (not same as WPA) then set your router to use WPA OR WPA2

My FW 1.21 setups have that option..... as some older wireless cards can do WPA but not WPA2

Set your Cipher to AES !!

Ok, I set it to WPA2 , no problem, everything works.

Now I guess I'll try AES only, right now it is Auto AES/TKIP.

Update:

I went out and bought another dir-655, with 1.21 firmware, and did not notice any difference.

I get still get a max of 130 Mps connection with transfer rates of 40-50 Mps average.

So, it is not the 1.32NA firmware, it looks like my network area/setup and/or dir-655 router.

I didn't try any of the "special" features on the v1.21, I was only interested in the speed at this point.

It might be becuase there are 3-7 2.4Ghz access points in my area, none in the 5GHz range.

I might go back and get a router that works in the 5GHz range

OK, I have to stop bashing the DIR-655 for speed, it was me.

My Intel Wireless 5100 adapter driver was set for "20 Only" for N communication, I set it to "Auto" and I am getting 300Mps connections when transfering files, woohoo!!

I get a normal connection around 150Mps, but as soon as I start using the connection, the speed ramps up.

It was weird that I had to go to Device Manager and manipulate the Properties of the adapter, to make it work properly. The adapter was factory set this way.

I also set to WPA-Personal, WPA2 Only and cipher to AES only. This seems to work fine.
