RAID 1
« on: October 15, 2009, 08:42:33 PM »

I have installed RAID 1 on my DNS-323 with 2 X Seagate 1.5TB drives and transferred a few mp3 files to it, I had another new 1.5TB drive which I decided to replace one in the NAS, then it wanted to rebuild and ofcourse I said yes, took about 5 hours though, time is not really a problem since I will only be doing it again if one of the drives fail.
Anyway, once the rebuild was complete it asked me to format the drives and now it's empty did I miss something or did I jump the gun a bit here.
I plugged the drive I replaced into another computer and in disk management it shows the drive as having 4 partitions 1 x 518MB, 1 x 502MB, 1395.00 GB all unknown partition's and 1 x 1.26 GB Unallocated.
I think I firstly formatted EXT3 so I think that is where the unknown partition's come from.
Just a few questions of help please.

It took five hours to sync the array with a few files on it?  That doesn't sound right!

The ideal way to stick a new drive in is to have the drive with nothing on it at all, no partitions or data.

I've tried replacing a drive with mine formatted with EXT2, and it rebuilt normally.  With 800 gigs on it, I'm not keen on the raindance of reformatting with EXT3 and putting all the data back to see if the behavior is different. :)

Thats right 5 hours and the drive I inserted had nothing on it and was straight out of the bag, I might format it with EXT2
