DNS-323 and OSX 10.6.1 very slow transfer HHEELLPP!! Please
« on: October 16, 2009, 10:36:55 PM »

Hi All

Just got a new DNS-323 and installed 2 x Seagate 1.5TB hard Drives. All works great but transfer speeds are pathetic, 20MB/s at best. "what am i doing wrong???" My 2TB firewire 800 drive transfers quicker???

My Setup
1 x iMac OSX 10.6.1
1 x Netgear WNR3500
1 x DNS-323 2x1.5TB Drives Installed

Some help would be very much appreciated

Cheers

Depending on the rest of your network, the type of file you're transferring, and whether you're reading from or writing to the disk, that sounds about right.

You're saying 20 megabytes per second (MB/s), right, not megabits per second (mbps)?

That's hardly a surprise!  Your problem is you have unrealistic expectations.  If you look around the Internet, you'll find that most benchmarks for the DNS-323 come in around the low to mid 20's with gigabit and jumbo frames enabled.  have you enabled jumbo frames?  If not, that will impact your speeds.

That's faster than my POS laptop writes to its own internal disk on SATA... lol

I had to SSH into it to kill -1 smbd and it went back full speed - I'm not sure I can say this on this forum... its still 1.08 beta in my case (its been for 2 months now...) when is 1.08 getting out of beta?

Hi all,

I am a newbie on here. I have a Mac Mini with OSX 10.6, time capsule and and a recently acquired DNS-323. I am in the process of moving all my files around from a selection of old small firewire HDDs. I know that my wired gigabit ethernet will not be as fast as Firewire 400, but it has so far taken 36 hours to move 900GB from a firewire drive on my Mini to the DNS-323. I don't know what speed this equates to, but it seems really slow to me.

I have read about jumbo frames, but don't know how to set up my Mac Mini or Time capsule for this.

The DNS-323 has 2 x 1TB drives set up as JBOD for now. Other than the DNS-323, this is a mac-only household!

Any thoughts?

Well, it took me all day to move 800gigs to a DNS-323 with jumbo frames enabled.  How far has the transfer gotten in that 36 hours?  Sounds like it's using a 100mbit connection.

Under the Setup tab when you select LAN, what does it say the interface speed is?  It's the first thing in the LAN SETTINGS area of the screen.

I am using OSX 10.6.1. When I look in the network preferences panel, Ethernet, Advanced, it shows that the configuration is set to Automatic. Speed (greyed out) shows 1000baseT, Duplex shows full-duplex, flow control, MTU shows Standard (1500).

It is connected by cable to my Time Capsule.

The 900GB file finished transferring (at last) after about 38 hours. I still have another 1TB to move......

Thanks for any advice

The only thing I can suggest is you look into how to configure jumbo frames on the Mac.  Hard to believe they don't support it, it's been supported in Windows since at least Windows 2000.
