Hi,

This happens to all computers connected to my DIR-655, Windows and Linux: If I start a large download (more than 40-50 mb), the download suddenly stops. I then have to cut the wireless connection and reconnect to have the download start up again. If I do not disconnect/reconnect it can hang there for hours or even time out. If I disconnect/reconnect the download starts again after 30 seconds or so. Then after a little while it stops again. For instance, when downloading a CD image this happens 5-10 times. It's even worse when I have large updates to my OS which includes large files since the upgrade application tell me the upgrade fails when I disconnect and starts over. I sometimes, but not always, have the same problems when I stream video for instance from Hulu (hulu.com). This does not happen when I'm connected to other networks, so I suspect it has to do with the router. If I connect my DSL modem directly to my laptop it does not happen.

a download of 40-50MB or even a CD image is no huge traffic.
And in most cases there is a way to solve the problem, your post shows only that you did not find it and are not willing to find it.
Perhaps you are better served with a Linksys - perhaps not.

You didn't tell us which firmware you use or your wireless settings or what clients (11N, 11G).

Generally try to set the router to mixed mode (G/N if 11B is not needed).
As encryption the best choice is WPA2-PSK / AES - no Auto settings !
SSID is set to visible ?
Try disabling WISH and WPS

Does this also happen if only one wireless client is connected ?

Also check if some other radio interferes with the router.
The may be another wireless device, cell phone, cordless 2,4 GHz phones, babyphones and so on or even a suveillance camera.

I am using the latest hardware (unfortunately it seems) 1.32NA. I have tried moving the antenna and router around (as much as the cabling allows), but no joy. There are no devices in the area which can interfere as far as I can see except a cordless phone which is made for VOIP. It happens regardless of how many (or few) clients are connected.  All this is set: WPA2-PSK / AES - no Auto settings SSID is set to visible. I will try to disable WISH and WPS and see if that helps.

Someone else in this thread suggested "the router is bad for large downloads". I do not think so.

I am using 1.32NA and I transfer large file 1-2GB between laptop (wireless) and desktop (wired), all the time. Never get a dropped transfer.

Try opening up your internet with TCPOptimizer (requires reboot) from www.speedguide.net. Windows comes defaulted to sucking bandwidth through a straw, this will make it a sewer pipe (its all crap anyway )

Are you just getting dropped transfers from Internet to your laptop, or within your network, or both?

Thanks! I am mostly on Linux myself although I have the same problems with Windows computers on my network. So I do not think the problem has anything to do with the computer tcp stack. I will look at those two posts you are pointing to and see if I can tweak my setup.

^^ I suggest doing a little more investigation so you can narrow down the problem just a little more.
- watch your router logs while this 'hanging' occurs
- do other things such as browse webpages (or anything really, just to have another data stream)
- isolate the problem to wireless, internal, or all by copying files around/inside your network
 (wired to wired, wireless to wired, external to wired,external to wireless)

Once you know when and where this happens you'll likely have a better idea of where to look to fix it.

Hi...

A total SWAG here...but mayhaps you have a bad ethernet adapter hiding someplace that is already flooding your LAN with crap....Such that once you try to start a large download or transfer, it simply overwhelms the router's switch portion....

Set up a X & Y chart and try using only specific paris of computers while all others are powered down fully....See if you can get functionality with some pair of PC's...

Well, I have to say, I think I talked too soon.

It seems the router does not like mixed signals.

When I first tested it was just a wireless N laptop with a wired desktop.

Last night, I was working on my old wireless G laptop, while trying (and I do mean try) to transfer a 700MB file from laptop to desktop and from desktop to laptop. I just could not do it. "Network source/destination not found".

The wireless G laptop and the desktop were in the same room. The wireless N laptop was in another room (20 feet away).

This morning, with the wireless G laptop shut down, and just the wireless N and desktop running, both in the same room, I had no problems transferring the same 700MB file. Go figure.

I'll try some more things and let you know.
