New scenario: Automatic backup
« on: October 20, 2009, 11:39:31 AM »

Hello there,

I have a good scenario for you guys.  How to implement automatic configuration backup to a centralize file servers, like a smb or ftp server.

With a system that can poll every config on each dfl you can add a new layer of security in case of hardware failure.

A nice feature, is to add a notification by email to let you know each time a dfl apply a new change in his configuration.  This is useful in a scenario where you are more than one person doing changes.

What do you think of this scenario fatman?

Well my tongue is tied (gotta love NDAs), but I don't foresee some of this being too unreasonable at all.

It sounds like most of what you are looking for here is logic that would be better implemented by a script on another machine, but the ability to pull configs by that script would be novel and useful.

So when D-Link will release a firmware to be able to pull configs from the dfl?  This should also be a feature for every entreprise switches.  Just look the competition, it's already there.

Seriously, I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to do on your side and will make entreprise users using dlink products happier  ;D

Did I hint hard enough at the NDA, or that that functionality in particular would be novel and useful?

Unfortunately, I don't have a time line for release.

I don't blame you one bit.  Suffice it to say I am as excited about the possibility as you are.
