DIR-825 drops connection to iPhone
« on: October 20, 2009, 03:35:41 PM »

New DIR-825 rev B fw 2.02NA problem communicating with iPhone 3G fw 3.1.2.
Configured to use any option of "WPA personal" Wifi connection to the iPhone periodically fails with the iPhone complaining of "incorrect wifi password". Locking and unlocking the iPhone makes it attempt to reconnect and usually temporarily corrects the problem. But this can happen frequently, making it practically unusable with the iPhone.

Similar problems have been reported on this site with the DIR-655 and DIR-615. I've been posting most to the DIR-655 thread since it seems the most active.

Update... I've tried every permutation of WPA/WPA2 and AES/TKIP. In all cases the iPhone is able to successfully connect, but periodically complains about "incorrect wifi password".

I have has the iPhone successfully stay connected if I disable security entirely, or if I use WEP instead of WPA/WPA2.

I haven't decided if using WEP is an acceptable workaround.
I am not having issues with the other machines on the network, 2 macbooks running Snow Leopard and a Windows XP machine.

We are having the same problem, and looking at the forums so are many others (on other routers than the 825, too).

I hope D-Link chimes in with a "we're working on it" message soon.  Else, will probably return it and go with another vendor.  How do you not test your firmware using an iPhone these days?!  Sheesh!

Please check if the phone able to connect to other wifi routers.

I ask because there was a recent OS update from Apple which screwed up wifi for a couple of my friends' iphones...

I have had not noticed problems with my older DLink DI-524 and my iPhone 3G 3.1.2.

Exactly the same issue here. With two iPhones one running on FW 3.1.2 and one on FW 3.0.1.

Exactly the same here.. sometimes wifi pw incorrect and sometimes it just drops the connection.
I had to buy a new router, cause I've got 100MBit Cable Internet, so I decided to buy DIR-825.
Since than I have problems with my Iphone. No Problems with 2 different Notebooks.

The last router was Linksys WRT54. No Problem at all 24/7 wifi with Iphone..
any ideas?

No ideas other than changing security to use WEP or no security at least allieves the incorrect wifi password issue. It may still drop the connection, but usually reconnects with out issue. I sometimes get a panel on the iPhone listing wifi networks to join, even though its supposed to automatically connect to mine, and mine shows up. But its happens very rarely and not as bothersome.

I'm getting close to the end of my 14 day return period for the 825. I had been considering the Linksys WRT610N instead, but I read horrendous reviews on Amazon about overheating. Other than this iPhone issue, I've had the 825 working quite well for my uses.

How well do you trust your neighborhood?

I hide my SSID and I do MAC Address filtering.  I do NOT use any encryption.  My iPhone and my iPod Touch BOTH have the latest OS3.x release and they stay connected very well.

IMO It is WAY too much effort for someone to roam around the neighborhood looking for hidden SSID's, and then when they find it, they have to hack your MAC (no pun intended), so I feel very safe with my config.  However this is not recommended for businesses with critical data on the network, because people will look to hack in there.

Actually your network is extremely vulnerable. Hiding your SSID makes you a target for someone looking to break in to a network. Encryption is always recommended. MAC filtering can easily be gotten around with a simple packet capture. Trust me it's not as difficult as you might think.

USE ENCRYPTION.

Why don't more people report this issue? The iPhone is very common and the DIR-825 doesn't work well with it. I expected the forums to be flooded with problems.
Even using WEP, I notice that many times the phone drops the connection and uses 3G instead, and eventually, usually, reconnects. Frustrating and slow. And I keep running into times when I don't want the iPhone on its own network. I can use VNC and other apps to control my media PC from the iPhone. But not if its on its own network.

What`s even more frustrating is that initial release 1.01 on Rev A worked AWESOME. Why or why I upgraded stupid firmware.

Reverted iPhone back to 3.0.1 so now it works fine again.
