short signal range

My dir 615 seems to transmit a very short signal, atm i'm about 12-15 feet away with just a corner of a wall in the line of sight, the signal i have is 'good' sometimes it's poor or i'm unable to connect although the laptop can see the router. If I take the laptop nearer (6 feet) i'll have an excellent connection and i don't get a dropped connection.
 my setup atm is
802.11 mode=mixed
wireless channel= 2.412Ghz - Ch 1
channel width= Auto 20/40 MHz
WPA Mode = WPA2 Only

what about the wireless adapter on your laptop? did you set it up properly. Also, access your router and check the wireless status so you can see if it shows 11NG and the speed should be up to 300 (if your laptop can handle N speed otherwise it will show 54 or 108). My wife has a laptop and I can outside in the front of the house and pick up the signal from my office. The DIR 615 is for about 1,000 square feet, not the biggest but plenty form me.

the wireless adapter is built into the laptop, not sure how i setup that. the router is showing 802.11g mode.

make sure that your channel width is set to auto (or 20/40) and that should work. It should be in the properties of your network adapter on your laptop.
