As reported here: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=8843.0

Trying to format a 2nd drive (not sure if this happens with a fresh drive), fails and returns "Error Code:112"

I have personally tried to format 2 different drives as a 2ndary drive and both fail. I DID NOT choose the Reformat as RAID 1 option. But the person in the above post did. He was also getting the Error.

I believe this is due to the 1.03 update. I even tried loading default settings, but no go.

I finally got it for format by downgraded to 1.01.

This needs some deeper looking into.

Work Around.

EDIT: areios755 found a better solution to this problem.
Remove one hard disk. Just put the un-formated disk into device
While you log into device, it will ask you to format it.
click ok, then the formation work.

After format successful, switch off the device and put another hard disk you already formated by DNS-321 before. then you can find these 2 hard disk works well.

conclusion:
FW 1.03 can do hard disk format successful when only one hard disk installed.

  • Tools -> System -> Save Configuration Settings (Just incase)
  • Tools -> Firmware -> File (Firmware 1.01) -> Apply
  • (Required Restart)
  • Format New Drive (Either from the prompt at login or through the menu: Tools -> RAID -> Format as Standard)
  • (Required Restart)
  • Tools -> Firmware -> File (Firmware 1.03) -> Apply
  • (Required Restart)
  • Tools -> System -> Load Configuration Settings (Only if necessary)

Hope this helps anyone getting Error Code:112

Nice...I was wondering if someone else ran into this.  I was toying with rolling back to earlier firmware.  I'll give it a try.  Just a quick question.  once you formatted the second hard drive, did you create a RAID 1 array with the existing drive?  Curious how this would work?

Thanks

Sorry I did not create a RAID 1 array. The hard drives were different sizes.

I would recommend first connect the hard drive to you PC and remove any partitions on the drive before formatting the drive in the DNS-321. If this does not work use the software provided by the manufacturer and wipe the drive to all zeros before formatting in the DNS-321.

It still doesn't change that fact that this is a regression. It worked just fine with firmware 1.01.

Hey EFC...I tried just that.  I formatted on my PC and then after that didn't work I used the utility from the manufacturer to return the drive to write all Zeros.  Still the same error.  I have another thread going for this as well....but it is the same error.  I have not yet reverted firmware and would like to avoid it.

Brian,
If you formatted your one good NAS drive to EXT3, from what I understand you cannot go back to a previous version.  The drive must be EXT2 format.  Good Luck, Joe.

I found another work around solution if you don't need RAID function:

Remove one hard disk. Just put the un-formated disk into device
While you log into device, it will ask you to format it.
click ok, then the formation work.

After format successful, switch off the device and put another hard disk you already formated by DNS-321 before. then you can find these 2 hard disk works well.

conclusion:
FW 1.03 can do hard disk format successful when only one hard disk installed.

I didn't have any formatting problems with dual disks and RAID 1.  This could be due to my hard drives.  It does sound like firmware 1.03 has some issues.  Who knew interfacing to a hard drive would be so difficult.

areios755's solution worked for me.  Before trying that solution this is what happened:

I have a 1TB Seagate plugging along and just popped a 2TB Hitachi in and it fails at 3% with Error 112.  It should be noted that it prompted me with "Format second drive?  Your existing data on drive 1 will not be lost".   Proceeding from there it didn't prompt me with any specific configuration questions like format as "normal" etc or config as RAID 1 etc like when I first installed the Seagate.

So... Powered down the 321, Pulled  the existing Seagate out, fired her up again and upon login I got all the detailed config prompts for formatting, including a choice of EXT2 or EXT3... I went EXT2 for performance as I have a UPS to protect in case of power failures...

Yes... perhaps a couple issues minor issues with 1.03.  Nothing a quick forum read can't cure.  Thanks to all...

Just ran into this error on my new unit with two WD green 500GB drives.  Installed the first drive, standard mode, no problems.  Added a VIRGIN IDENTICAL drive in the right slot.  Upon restart it asks me if I want RAID1 (yes) then crashes at 3% with the 112 error code.

Another work around is to SKIP the prompting for formatting the new drive at boot time, then go into TOOLS->RAID and do it there.  That seems to have worked.

Attention: also beware of another bug: when installing a second harddrive for RAID the NAS deletes all data on both disks when the first one was installed in the right bay! I just made that experience.
