DNS-323 will not sleep
« on: October 29, 2009, 05:43:46 PM »

Hi, my DNS-323 will not sleep. I upgraded to that beta firmware but it had so many problems that I flashed back to 1.07.  Now my NAS won't sleep.  I unplugged it from the network to make sure nothing was accessing it but it just sits there powered up.

It worked fine before I went to the beta firmware then flashed back.  I tried resetting 1.07 to factory defaults but no luck.

what should I do?

Resetting to factory defaults and then configuring again may also do the trick.

Well I have done both of those things and it still will not sleep.

Seems I am stuck with a unit that will no longer sleep. Apparently resetting to factory defaults does not actually do that as doing so has not fixed the problem.

Time to call D-Link support.

Have you tried a glass of warm milk or reading it a bedtime story?   ;)

I like the idea of a warm glass of milk...

I'm thinking that re-setting back to 1.07's defaults might not catch "all" of the settings that are configurable in 1.08 (the fan speed being one of them) - especially if one got changed out of 1.08's "default".

If you don't mind flashing a few times - try this...

Flash back to 1.08b05
Reset to factory defaults from within firmware 1.08b05
Restart NAS
Flash back to 1.07
Reset to factory defaults from within firmware 1.07
Restart NAS
Pray to your deity of choice...

The usual disclaimers apply...  (Backup, Flash at your own risk, etc...)

I'll try the multiple flash/reset idea.

I really hope that I can get this figured out.  I bought the 323 along with WD Green HDs specifically because I liked the low power requirements but now I'm not realizing them.

p.s. The network activity light blinks constantly. Should this only be blinking when data is being transfered to and from the 323 or does it blink constantly indicating general network activity?  I wonder if the network activity is keeping it awake?  I tried unplugging the network cable and of course the light goes off but it still won't sleep so unless the activity is coming from the 323 itself, I'm at a loss.

In my case, the network icon flashes whenever I have activity on the network.  The DNS-323 stays hibernating even though the network icon (and my switch) LEDs flash.  That network segment is pretty quiet at the moment, so I'm just seeing the heartbeat every few minutes or so (I have the DNS-323 on a segment without any users on that side of the switch - just storage).
For what it's worth - I'm also using WD Caviar Green HD's, though the 1T variety (added to signature).

Hi Doc,

My 323 is sleeping now for the first time in weeks.

I removed the Bit Torrent and Bonjour applications from the 323 then removed the port forwarding on my router which was forwarding the BT port to the 323. I'm not sharing anything but other people's clients must have been hammering my 323 anyway and keeping it from sleeping. Just a guess.

Maybe the 323 and router have uPNP anyway so I should not need to forward a port. I'll do some testing and see.

Light on the front of 323 is now only pulsing intermittently and the unit is sleeping like a baby.  I'm thrilled!

So I see numerous posts about the DNS-323 not sleeping due to BT being enabled.  Has anyone figured out a way to leave BT enabled and also have their box sleep when not downloading/uploading?  I have tried the usual troubleshooting and it is an internal problem with the box (the box will not sleep with BT enabled even if I unplug the LAN cable).  Thanks!

Yes. Replace the BT client with one from the FFP package (Transmission).
