DIR-825 Can't Connect to Internet... Period!
« on: October 30, 2009, 05:35:52 PM »

Hey,

I just bought this router today and tried to hook it up with default settings.  Nothing happens.  I can connect to the local network and see the router to change settings etc.  With that said, I can't do anything else.  The only way I'm able to write this is to use my old router.

It looks like the router isn't getting the DNS information and passing it to any computers.  I even hooked up the old router, copied the DNS server IPs and manually entered those in (instead of the standard 0.0.0.0).

I'm going crazy here... no setting I try changing do anything to solve the connection problem.  Also, understand that this is a wired connection... I cannot connect through a LAN cable to the internet, only to the router.

I've tried enabling and disabling DNS relay etc.  Any help is appreciated.

Really frustrated,

When I got my 825 I tried to manually configure it. Despite the fact that I still don't know what I did wrong - it didn't work. I later used the wizard and went from no connection to good connection. Sounds like you're trying the former - try the wizard.

Update to the most recent firmware if you are using rev B and if you are using rev A I will let someone else reply on which version is the best.

There are quite a few problems with this router that DLink is working on. It would be good to provide a list of hardware that you have within your network.. Like what devices will connect to the router (wired & wireless) that way i'm sure you'll get a much more detailed reply.

Alrighty,

Thanks for the quick replies.

Router info:  Rev B with 202NA Firmware

Devices:
2 PC that will connect via Lan
1 laptop that will connect via Wireless (most likely g or b).
1 laptop that will connect via Wireless (n)
1 Android phone

I will go ahead and try the wizard and hope that all works out for the best.

Another thing I forgot to mention was that I use Comcast (cable).

I also use chrome for a web browser.. I don't know if that will make a difference, and it shouldn't.

First I tried the install cd that came with the router:
When entering a user name and pass for the existing router the "install cd" gets an error that says "D-link" quick router setup has stopped working - Close program.  The current router that I'm moving from is a DI-624, which is really old.  This happened two or three times.

Next time through the install cd, I selected continue without entering the user/pass.  It got to configuring the router and said "no internet connection detected" - contact your isp.  The inet works fine as I can get on through the other router!  It still stepped through and setup the router asking for SSID, Router Pass, etc.  I set all that up and the it completed the router config.  Still no inet.

So, now I open a browser and go to the router ip address 192.168.0.1 and use the admin/pass to log in fine.  Now I try the inet setup wizard.  Don't change the password, changed the time, select DHCP (cable-comcast), and then I use the MAC address from the last router - leave host name as DIR-825.

So I started switching back and forth between the new and old router.  I never changed anything, I was just looking for differences.  All of a sudden it started working...  The entire time the modem was connected to the DIR-825.

Than I configured Wlan manually and of course it didn't work.  I went through the wizard and the laptop connected.  This is very odd...

The wifi connection on the laptop shows 150 Mbps, is this correct?

Thanks for the help so far.

The laptop being connected is an Asus K50IJ-D1.

The Wlan chip is apparently a Atheros AR9285 looking at properties on the laptop.

Looking at this spec sheet: http://www.atheros.com/pt/bulletins/AR9285Bulletin.pdf, it shows that it can only go to 150 Mbps.

So it looks like this concludes my setup journey.

Please feel free to add comments if you have any.

Now it is time to forward ports and see if that works :)

Does anyone else agree with what Tadzooks replied above?  I just got the DIR-825 on Friday and can still return to Newegg if needed...

I do not understand why people haunt forums for products that they claim to have disposed of.

Teh DIR-825 has worked pretty well as advertised for me with some odd behaviour thrown in - but nothing worse than I've had for lots of other brands of products.

You can trade brands and be pretty much guaranteed of swapping one set of problems for another.

I was thinking someone along the same lines as Joe above.  Now, shareport is setup and everything is working as expected and I'm having no issues.  I'll monitor any issues and be sure to post them in the forums.

Hopefully my experience above will be helpful to someone else.
