Virtual Servers & Port Forwarding not working at all!
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:05:28 AM »

Just bought the 855 as a replacement for a worn out 635 where everything used to work fine.
The 855 will not under any circumstances accept Virtual Server or Port Forwarding setup!

I'm simply trying to route http- and ftp-requests to my internal Synology Diskstation on ports 80 and 21.
This worked fine with the 635, but nothing I do (reboot, turn off power, upgrade to firmware 1.20) will make the 855 accept and act on these settings!
Everything works fine on my LAN, and I can ping the router from the internet side, but no http or ftp traffic in through the router works.

I've tried upgrading the firmware to 1.20, and accidentally ended up with 1.20NA even though it nowhere stated that it was the NA version (I've got a EU device).  And suddenly the guest network setup was gone from the menus!  Is this by design?  NA citizens are not allowed to set up separate guest networks?

Seems like the only setting the 855 will accept is the password setting.

Is there anyone out there who've successfully managed to get this router to work with virtual server or port forwarding setup?
If so, please please share any piece of information on how you did it!  (Firmware version, configuration settings, cabling, etc).

I consider myself fairly competent with computers and network gear, having worked as an IT consultant for over 20 years.  But this box gives me serious headache!  On paper it has everything I need.  Virtual server setup, guest network and shareport.  But half of it doesn't work!

(*Phew*... sorry, just had to unload a bit...  Seriously hope D-link ships some firmware that will make this thing work as specified...)

As you are already on NA firmware, try the latest 1.21 from here:

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir855/Firmware/dir855_firmware_121NA.zip

Reset it to factory defaults after flahing the firmware and configure it manually.
Don't use a saved settings file from an older version.

Use the Internet Explorer to configure the router.

My A2 EU version works fine here with 1.21NA and my Synology servers are online  :)

Lizzi, thank you.

Will try your suggestions.  Do you know if the 1.21 fw supports "Guest Access Point" wireless, as the 1.12 EU version does?  (I kinda need this u c)  :)

Yes, 1.21 has guest zone settings.

But it makes me wonder, I thought 1.20 had it also.

Finally got it all to work!

Info for those who might run in to the same troubles:
- upgraded to the 1.21NA fw
- hard reset router
- config the router by hand, this time putting my Diskstation in the DMZ (and enabling firewall etc on the Diskstation  :P)
- read up again on the ancient config info from my DSL-supplier - which I'd totally forgotten in the past 5 years since I config'd the now broken 635, where it obscurely stated that the DSL-suppliers ADSL-modem is blocking all port requests to the LAN side, and  if I wanted to do port forwarding, my router would need to be set to a specific IP....  this was probably the root cause of my troubles

Just goes to show; read the documentation - and read all of it, and do it again for good measure....  :)

Now, keeping an eye on the router logs to see if I experience the hangups and wireless problems that others are reporting here...  I have the 1.21 fw, router is nailed to the wall keeping it cool, no other 2.4Ghz devices nearby... fingers crossed...

Hi sorry for picking up on this thread after a few months, but I need some advice.
I have a dir-655 that will not allow remote access and I was thinking of trying the DMZ method. Now I am a regular home user and am very unfamiliar with networking so a lot of this stuff is a little intimidating.
I tried setting up a virtual server as per Synology's suggestion (public 8888 private 80- which is dlink routers instructions) for photostation but that did zilch.
Do you know if I need to set up a second one for port 5000 (which is kind of the general landing area for the disk station, isnt it?)
Also if I try the DMZ zone, does the virtual server/port forwarding setup remain or can that be removed from the router?
Overall how is this working for you?
I cannot change the firmware since the router came preinstalled with the latest firmware.

DIR-655 does not handle port forwarding or Virtual server.

Must be firmware related. My old router does it all. Why oh why is this happening.

Can't connect to NAS from WAN IP.

Not much of a router ...

Not sure if this its the same problem as I had the same thing on a DIR-685, port forwarding would not work at all. After about 3 hour of messing around I found out it was the MTU on my diskstaion, I had it set to jumbo frames. After disabling jumbo frame (booo) and setting to MTU 1500, it all works ok now.

I have Synology DS408 and DIR-855.. remote access, FTP, DDNS and streaming from squeeze center over internet all work ok... Using 1.22NA (I have since changed to EU firmware and haven't retested)..

Virtual server for remote access .. map 443 to 5001 i.e. https and use DDNS.
Port fwd 20,21,55536-55663 to NAS which must have reserved ip address i.e. for FTP(ES)

I'm a bit tired.. if this doesn't answer your question just reply.. I'm sure it should be straight forward enough to fix..

I agree, although otherwise it seems to work fine.  I tried upgrading to the latest firmware but that didn't help.

I'm having the same problem with port forwarding and virtual servers.
With no rules I see incoming connections which are blocked, after creating a virtual server or port forward there is no blocked connection in the log but I get no connection.

Has anyone got any idea, or should I wait for new firmware and hope d-link fixes this?
