Hopeless newbie...need help setting up router
« on: November 05, 2009, 12:42:24 AM »

Hi All,

Thanks in advance for your time!

I got a Dir-625 router, but I'm currently using ZoneAlarm. I really don't understand all of the benefits of having the DLink router vs. ZoneAlarm, but I do want to only use the D-Link. I think it's better to have hardware router vs. software, but not really sure about this...

How do I go about setting up the D-Link to protect my computer, once I uninstall the ZoneAlarm? Are there certain websites/ports that I should block? As you can probably see, I don't understand much about ports, etc...but definitely willing to give it a shot!

One more thing: do I still need to have an anti-virus installed?

Thanks, all, for helping me out with my questions!

Ken,

Here's an anology for you. You have a bouncer outside a club. He keeps the rif-raff and unwanted's out based on a certain criteria.
Then you have security inside in case some of the folks the bouncer let in start misbehaving.
Do you really want to decide between the bouncer and inside security? No!
The router firewall provides NAT and SPI and prevents certain types of well know attacks.
Zone alarm recognizes things like spyware and trojans and erradicates them. SPI and NAT cannot do that.
Keep both.
