Why no WDS support with the 4500?
« on: January 02, 2008, 06:51:10 PM »

I bought this to use my 4300 as a wireless bridge...

Why has WDS support been taken out of the 4500 yet it is listed in the 4500 manual as an option under advanced wireless just as with the 4300...

It was not included with this model because of complications with the firmware and the dual radios.

Is there anyway to bridge a 4300 to it then or is the 4300 incapable of being just a bridge as well even though it has bridge mode

The problem lies with the 4500, it can not act as part of a WDS bridge. It can however be used with a true bridge like a DAP-1555.

Are there plans to include it in future releases of the firmware?  As I would guess more than just myself loved the 4300 and love all it had to offer and got the 4500 for better signal and well just cooler newer stuff would like to be able to use the new and old stuff for something new and cool...

My guess is no. The release of the dedicated bridge (DAP-1555) probably saw the end of WDS on the gamer lounge series. However I don't mind asking our PM group about possibly re-adding the feature in future code.

So, what'd they say?
I got the dgl4500 hoping I'd be able to extend my wireless network, seeing as how the manual (1.00) said it would have wds.

The feature will not be included in any future firmwares. I am sorry.

Yeah same here... but with more hardware to sell, I don't see them adding it back at this point....

Just have to add a media bridge or take it back and get another 4300

DIR-655 A1 1.0 had WDS on it too.

the problem we faced with WDS support was on the compatibility of it working on some products especially non D-Link products and we felt that we were getting more negative hits for it than positive.

FYI, we have been looking into putting it back.  ;)

WDS would be hot on the 855, use the 5ghz band for bridging.

I would love to see that. Using the 5ghz band would be perfect, because 5ghz is good for long range...and who uses 5ghz for clients?

Most XboX gamers perfer the 5ghz band because of it's infrequent use in other wireless environments.
