High Pitched Noise
« on: November 09, 2009, 07:15:01 PM »

Hi everyone,

I have a DGL-4500 with A2 hardware. When it's plugged in to power, it emits a high pitched noise, similar to a CRT TV, however it's really annoying. Is this normal?

Just wondering if my unit is bad before working on the rebooting issues.

Thanks

when this happens, are there any cables connected? What happens if there isn't? Just wondering if it does this under load or not. It shouldn't and I would get it replaced. It should be silent.

yeah if you disconnect the power does the noise go away? If it does and it comes back on when you plug the power back I would either go back to Point of Purchase if you just bought it or RMA if you can't take it back to PoP

FurryNuts: It makes the noise even when there are no cables connected to it. This noise has been going on since the very first time I plugged it in (maybe a month and a half ago).

Ru-Fi-Oh: Yes, the noise goes away as soon as I pull the power cord out. It returns when I plug it back in.

I will see if it's been too long to take it back. Thanks for the help!

I've gotten my RMA. I will let you know what happens with the new router. Hopefully it's silent.

The best I've gotten out of this one is 6 days without a reboot or freeze.

I received my new 4500 today from D-Link RMA. It's silent (except when the OLED is on)! Very nice, D-Link!

It's also A2 hardware. I updated the firmware from 1.14 to 1.15 (that's all the check online option told me about). I will try running the router with this firmware version to see how long the router stays up. If all goes well I'll put on 1.21.

I've manually keyed in the exact same settings from my first router into this one. I'll post back (a week later at most - my old one never lasted that long) with results when I get them.

Also note that nobody else in my house could hear the noise from the router but me.

May I add that it must have been a bad capacitor.

To explain your mystery, older people loose the ability to hear certain frequencies.

I can easily see how a bad capacitor could cause the issue. It could also be the cause of the freezes and reboots I was experiencing.

Yes, I know that as you get older your hearing goes. My hearing is good enough that I can tell that a CRT TV is turned on, even though it's on mute.

What I'm getting at, is that if this new router doesn't have any issues, then perhaps there is a rash of bad capacitors out there that most people wouldn't be able to diagnose. Not to say that all bad capacitors make noise though (I've seen too many Dell motherboards with bad capacitors).

Time will tell.

The new router has been up solid for 6 days, 22 hours.

Heavy net usage over both wireless and wired. Only 12 wired TX packets dropped. Less than 2000 wireless errors over +1 million sent and +0.5 million received. Excellent!

I will let this run until the weekend before updating the firmware to 1.21. Thanks D-Link!

Router was up for 12 days!

Now updating to firmware 1.21 (not the beta). I'll see how it works after a few days.

I have this exact same problem and it is extremely annoying and i have a A2 router. I get the noise even if all i have plugged into the router is the power cable. I never have more than one cable plugged into the thing at any given time anyway as i have a dlink 10 port gigabit hub that i use. The noise is so annoying that i just resorted to sticking it in a closed wooden cabinet and ironically i can still hear it ::) >:( . i wish i never dumped my dir 655 for this piece of crap, never had problems with that router.

I strongly recommend getting an RMA from where you bought it, or from D-Link if it's too late. The router I got from D-Link has been working perfectly so far.

Please post your results.  My A2 with FW 1.21B3 has been up for 10 days.  LAN is looking good but the wireless which I only use with iphones and a macbook is not so great.
