Shareport Journey
« on: November 11, 2009, 05:25:05 PM »

I just thought I would post my shareport story here for anyone who might find it useful, I've spent the better part of 2 days working on getting shareport to work...

My stuff:
32 bit Windows 7 HP Laptop
32 bit Windows 7 Dell laptop
DIR-655 1.32NA Firmware and Shareport Utility 1.2.0 B3
SimpleTech external hdd connected to DIR-655 USB port
Microsoft Windows Security essentials

I downloaded Sharepoint last weekend since I wanted to be able to access my external hdd from both laptops.  The download and setup went very smooth and the hdd showed up as expected in file explorer.  I thought that was super simple however things started going South from there.  About 15 minutes later I started having connectivity problems.  After trying to troubleshoot myself with no luck I started looking online and soon discovered that I was not alone in my Shareport issues.  Although it seems most people are using it for their printer the connection issues are the same.

Here are some of the things I tried that didn't work.  Various windows power setting changes since I thought the problem might be related to power down features.  A batch file that wrote a txt to my hdd every 5 mins. to keep it "awake".  Various firewall port setting rule changes since I thought it might be related to security but after I turned off all my security software (while not connected to the internet) and firewall and still had the connection problems so I knew it wasn't that.  I also looked at just about every toggle and setting in device manager and network connections that there is and made any change I could think of that I thought might help and still nothing worked.

Since at that point I figured I had nothing to lose I installed the latest Beta firmware for the router and Shareport. I then went into the router configuration and turned off everything that wasn't essential such as securespot, wish, QOS, adavnced DNS, DNS relay, unicasting, etc. and amazingly it is now working for the longest period of time yet.  I don't think I'm out of the woods yet but will post how things are going after some time.

So this morning I checked my shareport conncection and it was still connected!  This has never happened before since I installed the software.  That tells me that the problem definitely is with a router configuration setting that is causing a conflict.  At this point I am going to add back the features I disabled 1 day at a time to try and identify which one is the culprit.

If anyone else is having shareport connection problems try and disable all the router configuration features I mentioned in my first post and see if that helps, it did for me at least for now.

Since Shareport was working great I decided to enable DNS relay and see what happens.  for the next 3-4 hours things were working well so I got a little greedy and decided to also enable advanced DNS service.  No problems for about an hour and then BAM, CONNECTION LOST!  So I then disabled advanced DNS service, rebooted the router and sharport imediately reconnected and so far I have had no problems.

At this point it cerainly appears to be an issue related to enabling DNS features on the router for my particular problem.  The only thing that bugs me is I don't see how DNS features would interfere with shareport connecting to devices?  I guess thats for D-link to figure out!

Yeah some of that stuff is baffling to some users, and it would seem to the D-link technical staff.
