Basic DIR 655 firmware question
« on: November 25, 2009, 09:09:32 PM »

I'm so glad I found this forum.  I have a problem with signal and performance and have lots of questions.

To start, I've read the sticky and have made the changes mentioned.  One of the items is to get the latest firmware.  I went to the D-Link site and I'm a little confused.  I'm running 1.11 so there's room for improvement.

Do I just take the most recent version of the firmware or are there other things I should be thinking about?

Thanks

Tom

Hi,

If you read these forums, I think MOST folks would suggest you NOT upgrade your firmware for now.  Many folks have big regrets about moving to the 1.3X firmware.  Other folks seemingly have had no problems with the 1.3X firmware.  One of the BIG issues is that you can't go back past 1.30 once you update to 1.3X

DLink is supposed to be working on corrected firmware to address the issues so many folks have reported in here.

Time will tell....

All I can say is IF you upgrade firmware on your DIR-655, my only advice is to ONLY up it to firmware 1.21 WITHOUT shareport.
I have a DIR-655 HW: A1/A2 FW:1.21
and the ONLY problem I experience sometimes is slowness on wireless N like every 5-7 days.
Since I am the only one in the house who uses the wireless all the time, I just login (put a ADMIN password on your router and be sure to DISABLE remote ADMIN for your own security) and goto Tools/System/Reboot and the router reboots, and speed is back up kickin' it.
This is just a little thing to do, and I can live with it.
I just would NEVER upgrade past 1.21 because it will, correction CAN, brick your router.
And then you have a nice paper weight.

I was deathly afraid of 1.32 and ended up flashing to it, and I found it to be similar to all the other dlink firmwares -- you have to coddle it to work properly.

Guess - I'm lucky? Bought the router about 2 weeks ago; HW Ver A4. I went straight to 1.30 (DL from dlink.com.sg).  :)

So far so good. Had problem with wireless connection dropping earlier. But found out the caused and know how to avoid it at least. Thanks to this forum.

My current setup incl. wireless video streaming from NAS to media player which generally is running fine.
