Hi!

I've bought a new PC, with 2 HD of 1TB each. I don't need that much, so I want to change my DNS-323 hard drives, with theese. But, i would like to ask...

Those I allready have in the NAS, are 500 GB each. If i take one of them out, replace it with one of 1 TB, would the RAID do the AutoBuild?? And if it's so, can I then replace the other one, and finally have two 1TB hds in the NAS?

Nope - if you do that you'll end up with a 500GB RAID1 array and 1TB of "missing" space - the only way to do is to backup the data, swap the drives out, create the 1TB array and then restore the data.

Hi!

I just did that: took the two disks out of the DNS, then replaced them with the new 1TB... Formatted it as a RAID 1. Then i took a live cd (ubuntu), switched one of the old RAID1 disks to the PC, and ran Ubuntu. When I got in, i saw the drive... But it's empty! It's just got: Lost+Found.

Can anybody help me? Please!!! I've got the other HD, but I'm afraid of loosing the info if i also switch it on...

Please help! All my data is in theese HDs!!!

Remove the 1TB HDD's from the DNS and only insert the HDD you tried to mount on your pc into the dns.  Restart the DNS and see if the volume is still present.

If present:

• Copy the data from the DNS to your pc/external HDD.

If no present:

• Shutdown the DNS
• Remove the HDD
• Insert the "untouched" HDD into the unit
• Copy the data from the DNS to your pc/external HDD.

Did that... There is nothing on the first Disk...

I'll try to do some crazy backup... (my laptop has just 58 GB free, and the disk is 500)... I'll post when I'm done.

I will format the "bad" disk, then copy from the good one to the bad one all the data. Then I will try to mount the bad one on Ubuntu, keeping safe the good one, and inserting the RAID of 1TB, and then try to copy the data. :S I think maybe, the data loss was when I extracted one of the RAID and inserted the new 1TB, then it asked if i wanted to format the new drive (it only showed the 1TB drive)... for making it RAID1... I don't know, but it maybe formatted it then... :S I don't believe a "Live CD" of ubuntu formatted it... :S:S But to be sure, I'll do a backup of the data... once again.

Wired!!!

I just putted in the two HDs, of the old raid... and magicaly, now i can see the data on the bad one... :S I connected it to the Ubuntu, and tried to copy/paste to the new raid... but i get in some files: cp: can not make 'stat' ... Input/Output Error

Does anybody know what this means? I know this might be a bit off-topic, I'm sorry

Well... i just post for other people that might have the same problem, ...

It seemed that when I tried to install the 1TB with the old of 500GB, the DNS started some kind of filesystem in the old disk, therefor, I couldn't see nothing at first, but when I stack the both of them, the bad one switched to the RAID partition, and showed it's content.  But there was files that were corrupted (maybe because of the new partition?). Thats because Ubuntu couldn't do 'stat' to some of the files.
I putted the drive in Windows, and the same happend... "corrupted file". So I finally decided to try with the good disk (the one I took out first), and it seems to be OK. I'm actually with my other PC running Ubuntu Live CD, mounted the good disk, and copying to the new raid.

So, what have we learned today? xD Before doing anything crazy like sticking a new and bigger disk into the nas trying to autobuild the RAID, ask in the forum, seek on the internet, and use common sense with your important backup data
