connection speed.......
« on: November 30, 2009, 07:07:19 PM »

hi everyone  :)
i followed the sticky topic of 300 Mbps connection requirements and I'm unable to achieve speed of more then 54 \ 81 Mpbp ( transmit speed showing at 135 and receive speed at 54 and sometimes 81 Mbps ) .not sure if i am still overlooking a step or two or some kind of tweak in router setup  that would help resolve this issue. I am using a Belkin 32bit CardBus Wireless Notebook Card, Model# F5D8013 N that supports Max Data Rates of 300Mbps with the latest drivers (RT2860). and application from Ralink.com
here is the link for the card: http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=372032
dir-655 Hardware Version: A4    Firmware Version: 1.21
Wireless setting as follows:
802.11 Mode : Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g (  802.11n only with same results )
Auto Channel Scan : Enable ( also tried to lock to specific channels but same results )
Transmission Rate : Best (automatic)
Channel Width : Auto 20/40 Mhz ( locking into 802.11 only with 40 Mhz gave me same results)
Security Mode : WPA-Personal
WPA Mode : WPA2 Only  Cipher Type: AES

since I'm not to tech savvy i did not try to tweak any other setting in router so all other settings are at the factory defaults.(other then the wireless setting as per above). if anyone can suggest a solution to increase my connection speed it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Beth

You should be able to achieve greater speed if the channel width is set to 40MHz. That is the only feature that can be tweaked on the router. Please verify that  the adapter has the correct settings.

Might try the original vendors drivers if you haven't.

Try this:
Under Advanced --> Advanced Wireless -->Advanced Wireless Settings:
Uncheck "Short GI"

Also try Enabling WMM in Advanced Wireless

Also try changing your antenna orientation:

hi, jpm67. :)
already tried original vendors drivers before i posted here, same issue.
i will try your suggestion in Advance wireless and post back with results. but a quick question: when i change the settings do i need to do it from the computer that is connected to the router, or can i do it from my wireless laptop? also do i just apply and save or a reboot of the router is required?
thanks,
Beth

Try going to your Device manager/Network Adapter Properties.

Make sure your "Wireless N" setting is not set to 20Mhz (for my Intel 5100 card it was the default).
I chnaged it form 20Mhz to Auto and got 300 Mps connection :).

All the other router settings look correct.

It's best to make changes from a wired connection. When you save, the router will tell you to reboot if it needs it.

Distance and obstacles also determine the max connection speed. Once the client is further away or obstacles like concrete wall, doors floors etc exist the connection speed will be maxed to a lower speed.

So....what's the environment like?

Hi, Demonized.
my laptop is set up right next to the router with no obstacles around so i don't think that's the issue. i do have a cordless phone in the area but it operates on 5ghz and should not interfere with wireless card i have which appropriates on 2.4ghz frequency.
also signal strength is showing Excellent at 100%.
