Bricked DNS323 when upgrading from 1.07 to 1.08 Build 08
« on: December 06, 2009, 01:37:58 PM »

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: initially 1.03, then incremental upgrades to 1.07
Software Version (Easy Search): I don't use it
Harddrive 1: Western Digital WD7500AYYS
Harddrive 2: Western Digital WD7500AYYS

After upgrading from 1.07 to 1.08 Build 08, DNS323 no longer starts up properly, which means that:
- the "main" button keeps blinking
- the network interface connects and disconnects every few seconds
- the unit doesn't respond to PING
- hard disks don't start rotating

I've already tried resetting the unit using the reset button, etc, with no success.

What is different from previous upgrades:
- a couple of days before the upgrade I did a manual rebuild of RAID1 because the second disk was no longer part of RAID, I'm not sure why, but everything worked fine after the rebuild
- a couple of days before the upgrade I had attached an external USB drive, which was connected to DNS323 at the moment of firmware upgrade

Since last week the product is no longer in warranty so, as far as I know, my only option is to try rewriting the firmware using the steps described here:
http://wiki.dns323.info/hardware:serial
and
http://www.cyrius.com/debian/orion/d-link/dns-323/recovery.html

Any other ideas would be appreciated because I really like my DNS323. If I can't fix it, though, I will buy a different product because I don't want to be afraid to do firmware upgrades.

Thanks!

First off, take both disks out of the unit.
Next, reset to factory defaults by holding the reset button for 15 seconds with power on.
If that doesn't get you connected, your previous idea is probably the way you'll have to go.

Thanks, I did that already. I'll keep you posted, I'll try that tomorrow.

No luck so far, I have "made" the necessary cables, but I need that 5v <-> 3.3v level convertor that is not easy to find.

I think I'll just buy another unit and will try to fix this one afterward.

I'm not sure if I should buy another DNS323 or go for something else. I was very happy with DNS323, but I don't want to be afraid to do firmware updates from now on. The problem is that I don't know I did wrong. I don't think the fact that I installed a "beta" firmware is what caused the problem, it must be something else.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Did the update seem to go successful then give you the prompt to reboot or did something happen during the update?

A couple of silicon diodes in series should solve the 3.3v vs. 5v issue for the input.  The output will be fine.

Yes, the update seemed to be successful. It rebooted itself and the web interface tried to reload but without success.

I left it like that for a few hours because the hard disks seemed to have some activity from time to time, so I thought that maybe it was running some disk check (since I had read something about scandisk on these forums prior to the update) or some other post-update process. I removed the power cord after 5 hours or so and powered it back; it started blinking but the hard disks didn't start rotating this time.

I think I'll buy a 4-HDD bay this time but it'd be a shame not to fix DNS323 up, it was a great toy while it worked.

Thanks for the tip with the diodes.

Hope you can revive the DNS-323, that's a bummer that it died that way.  :(

Next time, remove any connected USB devices before you update firmware.  That's all I can think of.

If you don't want to fear firmware updates, stick to non-beta releases, and make sure you follow the procedures exactly, and if you really want to be careful, reset everything back to factory default settings before applying any firmware update and disconnect the hard drives temporarily or be sure the data is backed up to another device before you flash.
