Wireless connection drops after 2-3 min
« on: December 09, 2009, 03:46:26 PM »

I have this (POS) DIR-825 with Hardware Version: 2.02, Firmware Version:B1

The wired connection works fine but the wireless connection drops after every 2-3 minutes.  I am using WEP.  I tried turning off 5GHZ  band but no success in establishing connection.

I have already wasted a few days trying to set this up and don't have any more patience in dealing with it. If you could make it to work, Please summarize your settings...

Well, the very first thing that came to mind was to use WPA if you can, as the security on WEP isn't that strong. Not that it would affect signal strength, just a security issue.

Now, first a couple of questions. What kind of wireless device are you trying to connect with, and how old is it? Where is the device located in relation to the router? What kind of OS are you running? Is the wireless device 'N' capable, or only B&G? (If any body can think of things I've missed please add them)

I have had an issue with getting a couple of my hand-held devices to connect to the router (A Palm TX and an ASUSU MyPAL Windows Mobile device) as both would not connect while the 'N' standard was enabled. Our 2 lapotops would connect fine, but not the hand-helds. (With and without encryption)

Let us know how you're setup, and someone should be able to help you discover what's causing the problem, and I hope this helps getting it started.

I had this exact same problem with the same firmware you mentioned. Updated the firmware to Firmware Version: 2.02NA and it is now fixed.

I already upgraded the firmware to 2.02 NA and it made no difference.
I have  2 'G' laptops in the network which keep on dropping connection.

The 3 desktops which are wired connected to the router, have no problems at all.

I get this problem as well. When I am using only one wireless device, whether it be 2.4 or 5ghz, doesnt matter, then i have no problems. As soon as I use more than one wireless device at the same time, then i get my dropouts. It loses connection.... comes back on.... and so on and so on.

I had a similar problem. I spoke to D-link and it seems that people there are also not so knowledgeable about it. They could not tell me what to do pinpointedly and bitting around the bush is not my style. However, I figured out that if I disable "Auto Connect" on my Laptop ( and this issue is only when  I used the 5GHz. network. It works fine with 2.4 otherwise) and started connecting manually after my Laptop boots up. And this seems to be working properly after then. I have been using like this for a couple of months and not did I have encountered the same problem. I hope Dlink fixes this bug in their updated firmware.

Also after I changed the position of the router and hung it as high as I could, the connectivity has been very stable and I am able to get like 30% signal strength and 165Mbps speed and it goes as high as 35% signal strength and 246Mbps at times.....It means that if you hang your router as far and as high as possible from your modem/pc, it renders at a good speed and signal strength.......However, I am still not satisfied with it giving me only 30% signal strength.....70% is lost.....and I know there are a no. of factors afftecting it.....but at this strength and speed I m able to stream HD content from Net without interruptions and so I am OK for the time being....

I also have Dir-825, Hardware Version: B1       Firmware Version: 2.02NA

I have a similar problem. I can't seem to transfer any large number of files without the wireless dropping out. It takes about 2-3 minutes to stop working. I have all Windows-7 networked devices, some N and some G. It doesn't matter if I'm trying a N to N or N to G connection they all suck.  It's not distance, as the signal strength is usually 3+bars and sometimes 5 bars, if I'm in the same room as the router.

What is going on? I've spent the evening researching this and it appears to be a common problem reported on many sites or reviews with the DIR-825.   I've only owned it 6 weeks.

I'm curious if you folks have tried a different wireless radio channel?  I believe that most routers come set to the same radio channel.  If you have other wireless routers in your neighborhood, you might be experiencing some interference.

I don't think its the wireless channel being fixed on #6.
First my router is set to auto hunt for free channel (mmm.  I wonder if it's doing this too often?)

Second I have also tried the case of connection my laptop to a desktop through the wired ports, and I still get this behavior.  The connection quickly drops.  The statistics of the transfer (from Window-7 device manger) shows transfer rates about 50Kps, yes that's kilobits/sec for a wired transfer.  The device manager reports the PHY connection as 1GB, not 10M or 100M.
