No 802.11N connection in Windows 7?
« on: December 10, 2009, 08:51:21 AM »

I recently bought the DWA-556 network card with a DWA-665 N D-Link router. When the router is set to broadcast on 802.11n/g setting, I can connect just fine to the router. When I change the setting to N only, I can't even associate with the router.

System details:
OS: Windows 7 (64bit)
Card Driver: I have the latest version from dlink's website 7/8/2008 I think- 1.3.0?
My router is set to WPA2, AES, 20/40/Auto

I can't connect ever if I use the D-Link utility, but if I use windows 7's "Find a driver for this device" setup and point it to the driver folder I downloaded from D-Link's site, it can connect to a 802.11G network just fine.

Is this a known problem that W7(64) doesn't have a proper driver to connect to an N network with this card? Is my card broken? Is there something else I should be trying?
Any help would be appreciated.

I spent all last night trying to get my 556 adapter to connect with Windows 7 64bit and I eventually did it but not really sure how. And even then it was terribly slow. Still is slow now - did a speed test, got 1.9mb download speed through the 556 adapter when I'm signed up for 10mb cable internet. I've also got an old BT Voyager 1055 USB adapter which works a hell of a lot better than the D-Link card and gets a download speed of around 8mb. I'm at a loss why this is the case though I'm guessing it's all to do with the N part as that what is used to connect the 556 adapter whereas the BT dongle just uses G.

Well the above for the 556 adapter was with the latest drivers available here. When I do an automatic search for newer drivers it finds one done on the 5th of October (2009) and it's even slower despite the fact it's connected via N at 300mps. I just want to know if this adapter is even usable with Windows 7 or if I should just stick to my 5 year old usb adapter which I got for free from a friend.

I have had horrible connectivity issues with my Win7/dwa-556 and my d-link router as well. I finally stumbled upon another forum today that reminded me there is an alternative to d-link/microsoft drivers, and that's to get the actual atheros drivers.

Here's the other forum post I found:
http://gamers-underground.com/forum/tech-chat/31435-d-link-dwa-556-pci-e-slow-speeds.html

And here's where I grabbed the Atheros drivers (as referenced in the above post):
http://www.station-drivers.com/page/atheros.htm

This seems to have fixed my issues so far. I would intermittently lose connection, or it would turn to crap speeds, all seemingly at random. I tried an internet "speed test" a couple times and noticed it would frequently go as fast as I expected then suddenly completely stop... After installing new drivers it now downloads at the expected speed the whole time, no stops.

Hope this helps someone, cuz D-Link doesn't seem to offering any help...

Looks like I spoke too soon... The blissful browsing was short-lived and I'm back to intermittent connectivity...
