My router was working fine. I was away for 3 weeks and had shut everything off during that time. I returned and was unable to obtain a connection. I did the usual reboots, power downs, etc. and finally got a connection, but it was erratic and slow. I was running firmware 1.11.
I figured it was finally time to upgrade to 1.21. Via the router it states this is the most current version. I know Dlink is up to 1.32NA, but I assume it might be related to the hardware version only being A2.
After the upgrade I uploaded the gws file I had saved. The combination led to more problems so I reflashed 1.21 and this time rebuilt the parameters from scratch. The signal is very erratic and I am constantly getting connection timeouts.
My network consists of a RoadRunner WebStar cable modem (Scientific Atlanta) connected to my Dlink DIR-655 router. I have an Ethernet connection to a MacPro and my PS3. I connect wirelessly from a MacBook Pro (built-in Airport N modem), HP laptop (DWA-652), iPhone 3G, and Wii. The wireless is setup as WPA-PSK (TKIP). It is running mixed n & g mode. WISH is enabled. Channel width is set to auto, but primarily runs 40mhz. Auto channel changes quite often. DCHP reservations are enabled.
I can never get greater than 130mbps on the MacBook Pro. The HP laptop with the DWA-652 fluctuates wildly, even at 100% signal strength in the same room in direct sight of the router, about 12ft away, running from 40mbps to 270mbps with the occasional jump to 300mbps. When the HP laptop is used in the typical location, about 50 ft away in another room, the signal varies from 22-52% and the speeds range from 36mbps to 216mbps. The fluctuations can go from one extreme to another, sometimes within seconds.
I am extremely frustrated. I have already spent 8 hrs testing, making changes, more testing, etc.
I am hoping someone can provide me some ideas or solutions. Thank you.
Let me know if you need screen prints, etc.
UPDATE:
I reconfigured the router, eliminating DNS relay, locking in Channel 11, and changed wireless security to WPA2-PSK/AES. Things work a little better, but I still see big drops in performance and occasional timeouts. All of the devices work under WPA2-PSK/AES although I had to reset the network settings on the iPhone to update it.
I reviewed options such as a repeater or extender and wanted to know, which, if any, people have had success with when linked to the DIR-655.
