Random freeze-ups playing UT2004 On FW 1.21 with SS
« on: December 10, 2009, 01:17:32 PM »

Prior to this I had a dlink DGL-4300 gaming router with a DSD-150 (securespot) and had no problems.  Then my DSD-150 died.  So I figured I'd go out and purchase a DIR-655 since securespot is cheaper and integrated on this unit anyway.  When I played UT2004 and using the old hardware all was great.

Problem
-----------------------
Now (for about 4 months) I've had this new DIR-655 with firmware 1.21 with Securespot enabled and when I play Unreal 2004 I'll get it every 5 to 10 minutes where I just *freeze* for about 5 seconds... sometimes in mid air.  Oddly, I can shoot, but I cannot move.   If I switch back in the old hardware (DGL-4300) all is great... it seems isolated to the DIR-655.  I have not noticed random freeze-ups in general internet usage.  If that is happening, I haven't noticed it.

Can anyone point me to the best way to troubleshoot this problem?  I'm fearful of upgrading firmware after reading such horrible posts about newer firmware for this unit.  I'd like to keep this unit as I have 4 boys in the house and the securespot is just what I need for family internet control.

Connected to the router are several computers, Vonage, etc.  I don't think the router is overheating as it is in a room that stays about 50 degrees ambient temperature.

What I've done to try to troubleshoot
--------------------------------------
I have disconnected other computers or turned them off to see if they are causing issue like the WHS, Slingbox, HR21-700, Vonage
I have reset the router to factory defaults.

Suggestions are appreciated.

Here is a sample of the logs.  I'm not sure why but it seems one of the wireless clients (or more) keep resetting.  Is this indicative of a problem with the DIR-655 as the old DGL-4300 didn't do this.

Seems to basically be the same set of messages over and over.

Both the wireless devices that keep deauthenticating are wii gaming systems.

The weird thing is they are both turned off at the time (yellow light).  Is this fixed in a firmware above 1.21?  I have hardware A4.  I'm not sure that this is the cause of my gaming slowdown but it is annoying in the log and can't be "right".

That is normal with the Wii when its in Standby mode (yellow light).  The Wii will open up an Internet connection every once and a while to update itself.  I know the news channel and weather channel won't run if the Wii is not set yo be in Standby mode.

Hi dealsdyker,

You mentioned Securespot and it being enabled. Being enabled or having it checked, does not do anything or cause any problems, as long as you aren't paying for a Securespot Subscription.

SECURESPOT costs money annually.

With that said, SECURESPOT includes McAfee Anti-Virus and an Anti-Virus scan can cause freezing, while it is working.

Disable SECRESPOT and see if the problem still exists. If it doesn't the problem was SECURESPOT. If the problem, still exists, look on the computer itself for a cause of the problem and Reenable SECURESPOT, if you are paying for it.
