DNS-323 and Western Digital TV failure..? I need help!
« on: December 11, 2009, 12:54:43 AM »

Hi everyone, first post here. I would really appreciate some help on this one.

The situation I have is that I have the DNS-323 and it has firmware 1.07 on and I am trying to stream content from the NAS to my new WD TV Live. Small files works fine, but ANY HD content fails to play. I just get a small part of the video working fine then it just starts skipping / stuttering and I loose sound (when I get to a more complex scene in the movie).

As a test, I moved one of the HD files onto my laptop running OSX 10.6.2 and the file happily streamed from my laptop to the WD TV Live. So, I can only assume my wiring / wd tv live is fine and that the problem lies with the DNS-323 not delivering data quick enough. The WD TV Live does not have any options to chance buffer sizes unfortunately.

My DNS-323 is connected to a gigabit ethernet and I achieve about 18-22Mb / sec.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue with my DNS-323 and Seagate FreeAgent Theater+. If i try to stream HD video via USB from FreeAgentGo HDD or from notebook via 100Mbit Ethernet - all HD content plays good. If HD streams from DNS-323 via LAN we can have an issue with sound in some cases.
I think, it's an issue with access and transferring 2 files simultaneously: video stream file(1080p) and audio stream file(with bitrate 1500kbit/s and more). If content packed in one file (.mka or .avi) we have no any problems. But if soundtrack stream store in selected file then the SAMBA on DNS-323 not ensure the needed stream transmission(QoS).
I tried to stop additional services(BT, ftp, etc.) on DNS-323 but can't eliminate the problem with sound track. Therefore it is not a CPU of DNS-323  performance issue. Bad multitasking SAMBA?
I tried to use NFS as an add-on service with the same result. Bad multitasking in NFS service?
I dont know :(

Thanks for the info. Since I last posted my first response I contacted Western Digital about the problem and was basically fobbed off saying that only WD equipment was compatible (although 3rd Party NAS boxes may work). A bit of a cop out to be honest. I was at least hoping for some sort of helpful tips even if they could not fix the problem!
