1.08b08 email notification vs. web interface details
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:47:17 AM »

Just a small thing regarding 1.08b08:

I have removed the drives to install bigger ones.

In the system log on the web interface it says correctly:

Code: [Select]
Date  Time  Info
2009/12/13 21:46:57 HDD2 Hard Drive Has Removed
2009/12/13 21:47:00 HDD1 Hard Drive Has Removed

Then, in the email notification I get the following message:

Code: [Select]
Left Hard Drive Has Failed
Right Hard Drive Has Failed

Sincerely,
Your DNS-323

I mean, this is not completely wrong, but it is confusing. Shouldn't this "failed"-message be reserved for an occurence when a RAID array gets out of sync or the filesystem is corrupted?

Proposal/recommendation:
Why not have the real reason in the email, just with the same message as given in the web interface?

It may not be possible to differentiate between a drive removal and a drive failure - depending on the nature of the failure - and no, I don't think a corrupt file system or an out of sync RAID array should be flagged as a drive failure, in both instances the drive will still come to a "ready status"

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Mhhh. I believe  from the messages quoted  above, one can see the DNS-323 is obviosly able to detect a drive removal (at least within the web frontend). It is just communicated by email in a different way than it is logged within the web frontend.

It's ja very minor annoyance for a home user like me, I can live with that little flaw. But I don't know if a remote admin user would appreciate to be better informed if someone pulled out a drive.
