Can not connect from wireless laptop running Windows XP
« on: December 16, 2009, 08:43:23 PM »

I am trying to connect my laptop via a wireless connection to the D-Link DIR-655 router.
The router is hardware version A4, software version 1.21.
The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300D which as an Integrated Atheros 802.11b/g wireless LAN.
I am running Windows XP on my laptop.

The router's wireless setup was done manually by me and has these options:

Enable Wireless checked and set to Always. A wireless network name, let's all it here 'MyWirelessNet'. The 802.11 mode is 'Mixed 802.11n, 802.11g, 802.11b. Enable Auto Scan Channel checked. Transmission rate set to 'Best-automatic'. Channel width set to 20 MHz. Visibility Status is Visible.

Security mode is 'WPA-Personal'. WPA Mode is 'Auto (WPA or WPA2)'. Cipher type is 'TKIP and AES', group key update interval is 3600. I have a pre-shared key, let's call it 'Y2YT5689OPEE'.

Under Windows XP on my laptop it finds my wireless network by its name of 'MyWirelessNet' and I click on the entry and then on the Connect button. It prompts me for my network key and I type in 'Y2YT5689OPEE'. I then type this in again in the Confirm area also. It then attempts to connect, taking a very long time to do so with a message box and a message "Please wait while Windows connects to the 'MyWirelessNet' network" and another message below it which says "Waiting for the network...". Finally the Wireless Network Connection message box closes but the connection has not been made. No error message shows anything.

Ideas, thoughts, solutions, experiences, or things I might try to get my laptop to connect wirelessly to the DIR-655 are most welcome. I have tried:

1) Setting my Security Mode: for the DIR-655 to None. When I try to connect, Windows XP correctly now does not ask me for a network key, but it still can not connect to my network. I set it back again for security purpose afterward to WPA-Personal.

2) Running a wired network cable from my laptop to the DIR-655. When I do that, no longer connecting wirelessly, everything is successful. But naturally I want to connect wirelessly so I can move my laptop around. Isn't that what laptops are all about ?

It was already installed in an SP. Also I mentioned in my OP that no connection was made even when WPA2 was turned off. I have been able to connect my laptop wirelessly to other routers when I am travelling but can not connect wirelessly to my DIR-655.

Thanks for your suggestion, nonetheless.

Do you have enabled the MAC filter in the router's menu ?
If yes, did you also enter your wireless MAC ?
If yes, check it again. Sometimes it is only a small difference as between B and 8.

I do not know what the MAC filter is in the DIR-655. Would you please point out to me on which screen this setting resides ? I could not find this in either the wireless setup or the wireless advanced settings. Thanks !

I see a MAC address filter under Advanced | Network Filter but I have "Turn MAC address filtering off".

Hi eldiener,

You need to reboot your computer that you are using Windows Wireless Network Manager to connect to the Router after entering the information with.

That's the problem.

Have you rebooted since entering the correct information?

What correct information do you think I should be entering ?

I have barely changed the information from what I posted in my OP. I did change from "Channel width set to 20 MHz" to "Auto 20/40 Mhz" since the documentation suggested this was more flexible. I rebooted my laptop but it still did not connect. If there is some change which you, or others, think should be made in order to get this working, I will be glad to try it out.

Nor do I think I really need to reboot the laptop machine after each time I change the router settings, since there is a "Refresh Network List" in "Wireless Network Connection" so that the client picks up the new information from the wireless network for my router. But I will do it anyway as long as someone has a suggestion of some change which will get my connection working.

I finally solved this problem.

To everyone who replied helping me out with this problem, I want to say thanks. By changing the DIR-655  setting from mixed mode 802.11b / 802.11g / 802.11n to mixed mode 802.11b / 802.11g the connection was finally made. My laptop supports only 802.11b / 802.11g so I guess setting the DIR-655 to support all three caused the problem ( although as a programmer I don't think it should ).
