Can someone give me the ideal settings for this router?
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:48:52 PM »

I have had nothing but problems with this router. I installed the newest beat fw and just want this to work. My biggest problem is the wifi continuously drops every minute no matter the distance from the router. However, I did notice that the wifi connection was stable (although not great) when my desktop wasn't on.

My main uses are bit torrent, online gaming and using the wifi.

Suggestions?

Yes, its a love hate router for me. I love so much about it, but if it can't get the basics right, like not rebooting every few minutes to once an hour. To randomly and completely stop working, resetting defaults and holding resets, still no internet until I reinstall the Firmware again after it was just 'working' for the last 2 weeks and dies the day I leave my wife home alone in the rain for her to find out that our expensive router is a giant POS.

Best setting you can do is reinstall the firmware a couple times from a wired connection.
And if its still being dificult, do what I did and just get an Apple Airport Bases Station Extreme and low and behold! Dual Bands, Internet?! Gasp! no way... I'm online... wtf??, Share-port that does what it's name implies 'shares a port' with everyone not locked into only 1 person on boot-up. That's not 'sharing' in my mind, no more random rebooting, and no more angry kids, friends, neighbor or wife, oh Hallelujah! Oh Happy Days, oh Happy days.

oh my gawd? I felt like I was going crazy.. but it was only buying that DIR-655 that was the craziest idea I've ever had.
SUCKS. I feel just like a nagging parent, looking at the damn thing... 'You just had so much potential and you just let it all go...' 'What HAPPENED?? Look at yourself, stand up straight, just think of all those people that still have faith in you??'

The heard is thinning. And i LOVED D-Link. The firmware just sucked ass on this one. Sorry, no gentle way to put it really. its just a router, it should just WORK!!!

Most people won't need to change much. One suggestion is that you should choose a channel instead of letting the router do it if you live in an area where there are signals greater than 50%. I tried to let the router do it and it seems that one of my neighbors has a similar router and they get into a 'hunt' for a new channel sometimes. It makes it seem like the wifi is dropping out a lot but really it is moving to a new slot.

Download the latest beta firmware...it should fix your connection issues. The DNS relay is why a lot of connections have been dropping out on these routers.

Nope, beta doesn't help.  Give it about 3-4 days and then go stream something from youtube or netflix.

I think I'm just going to start rebooting once a day as preventative maint.  until I can afford to replace the router.

1.32 does not contain the DNS fix....for that you have to get the 1.33 firmware.

I was thinking it would be cool to share config files in some kind of repository, less the passwords of course .:)

If you were thinking about the saved files from the router you can forget about that; they're encrypted.

I know but you could still load someone else's on your router and look at the settings
