Detailed DNS-321 log?
« on: December 23, 2009, 11:22:35 AM »

While working on an issue, it occurred to me that it would be very useful if there was someway of obtaining a verbose DNS-321 log - what it's been doing, who has been accessing it, IP addresses, etc.

Is there anyway of obtaining this, such as by some setting that I'm missing, or through a plug-in?

Thanks!

I haven't tried this, but if you ssh into the box (have to install fun-plug first) and go to /var/log your logfiles should be there. I could be wrong.

I have seen no sign of any feature to expose logs to the basic users, i.e. no web interface, plugin, whatever. I think the DNS-321 does not support SNMP. It is a very basic home box in its default setup. (Which is what most home users need - more complex features would just confuse many of them.)

I logged in on my box to verify this, and I have to report that it does not seem to use the /var/log directory for the logs. All the files I found there were empty. Sorry.
You might have to figure how to configure the logging of the individual daemons and modify the setup.
Well, this is Linux, so as they say: "You can do it!" (Meaning, we did not provide any easy to use facility....)
*smiley*
BTW, if you run 'dmesg' while logged in on the box (at the Linux prompt) it will give you a log of the basic boot process and logs of the HDDs spinning up / down (w/o timestamps). Also I found a logfile in /etc/ called system.log. Samba logging can be configured in the smb.conf, but you will have to do some trickery (see fun-plug documentation) to make the changes stick. Just FYI. If you were still in the mood of looking for logs.
