Initial Setup

Just purchase this NAS and I had a few questions.

Can I setup using just one drive for now?

Is there a certain slot (left/right) I should use to put the drive in?

Can I setup remote access to the NAS over the internet and how?

Thanks for you advice in advance.

No sweat running one drive, lots of people do it that way.

I'm pretty sure you can put it in either slot, but if that's not correct, it'll be obvious as soon as you try to format it! :D

The only remote option with the DNS-321 out of the box is FTP, which is not all that secure.  If you breakdown and add a 3rd part secure ftp server, you'll have better security.

Ok. I read somewhere that you had to put the drive in the right side if you plan to using Raid 1 later.

For RAID, that may be true.  I'd wait until one of the D-Link guys comes along, they'll be more sure.  I've never run it with one drive, but other people here are running a single drive.

As for RAID setup, I have personnaly done it both ways, it does not matter which drive is first.  However for your information, Drive 0 is the right drive, Drive 1 is the left drive as looking at the front.  When you insert a second drive the system will realize it and ask to format it.  Then you have the option to place it as a RAID 1 if you like.

I would recommend that depending on how you use the NAS, you should think of placing it on it's own UPS for backup power.  I have one that I hope will last about an hour with the drives pulling all 18 Watts while running.  I have my drive set to power down after 30 minutes of inactivity.

Just an idea worth thinking about.
