I have 2 computers accessing the internet through my router, wired, and I want to be able to pull files from the second computer to the first.

How do I get the second computer visible on the network? I have file sharing enabled (WinXP Pro SP2) on both computers, and the C drive setup to be shared, it just doesn't show up anywhere.

This was previously working when I had the second computer plugged into the second lan card on my computer, but adding the router has stopped me from being able to share files.

nobody knows how to share files across a network?? I would really appreciate some help, I can't seem to get it to work on my own.

If these two machines are on the same subnet then make sure that they are in the same workgroup; right click "my computer", goto properties, computer name, check the workgroup. Next check your firewall settings on each XP machines to make sure the firewall has an exception for file and printer sharing ( this is the most likely cause). After that then its a matter of making sure the shares are correct. With Simple File Sharing enabled, its pretty much done. If you are doing the standard sharing then you are going to need to make sure both machines sharing a common user name so you can log onto the others shared folders.

computers are both on the same workgroup, firewall has been turned off (though the exception is there on both for file sharing)

both computers don't share the same login information, they have different usernames and no passwords on both.

I don't see how that affects it anyway, when the computer B was plugged directly into computer A's second lan port, sharing worked just fine.

But now that it's connecting through the router nothing is shared/visible, I can't even ping one computer from the other.... no response. I've also tried turning off the firewall in the router settings.....still nothing.

There is a setting for WLAN Partition, this setting is supposed to prevent wireless
clients from communicating with each other. This might be causing you the problem.
If your client computers are working ok then you should be able to connect both
machines directly to the wired switch ports and have each machine see each other.
Then when connected wireless, this WLAN partition will control if the machines can access
each other. Try toggling the setting to see what happens.

the two computers I'm trying to share are connected through the wired ports. One of them is on port 1 (the main computer) the other is on port 4. I have my xbox on port 2, and the Wii connected wirelessly.

WLAN partition is also not enabled.

Are both PCs NICs set to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS info? Is DHCP enabled on the router?

I see above that you said the computers cannot ping each other.
Give us your settings, go to start run then cmd, at the prompt type in ipconfig /all
since this is a wired connection look for the ethernet adaptor and note the following:
DHCP enabled:
IP Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:
DHCP server:
DNS Servers:

do this for both PCs

regardless of windows sharing and barring any misconfiguration, the basics of networking should allow
you to ping the other computers as long as they are on the same subnet. You should also be able
to ping the gateway, which should be the LAN IP address of the router.

I should also mention, I have ipv6 installed, but not fully apparently, because I can't connect to ipv6 sites.... I've just been playing around with it, but I was still having the same issue before I installed it. I thought I should mention it though anyway.

The secondary pc did have the IP setup manually, and I set it to automatic for everything, now the "internet gateway" under network connections is just sitting there showing "connecting". Internet no longer works. I'll try and reboot it.

DHCP is enabled on the router.

ok I uninstalled ipv6, it got rid of "internet connection" from network places, and now both computers are able to connect to the internet, however, they both have the same IP now. 192.168.0.10

they are using 192.168.0.1 as DHCP, DNS etc. subnet is 255.255.255.0 for both.

Still no file sharing, and pinging is pointless with the same IP.

They shouldn't have been given the same IP if the routers DHCP server function is working properly. Power cycle the router and reboot both PCs and check thier IPs again.

Its good you posted the entire ipconfig output.
Look at the following excerpt from your posting.
Now maybe I am just tired but am I mistaken is seeing
that both machines have the same MAC address even
though the network cards are different??
This would explain why each computer got the same IP address from DHCP.
DHCP gives out the IP address based on the MAC address, it wouldnt know
that there was a duplicate, it would just assign the last leased IP to the
other computer with the same MAC. Communication would also fail because
ARP would be resolving the same address for both machines.

omg.... I can't believe I forgot about that.

before I got the router, I had to change my IP address, since I'm with rogers and my IP was static I manually entered a MAC address of the secondary computers NIC to get assigned a different IP.

I can't believe I didn't notice that.
good eye dude.

I guess I'll have to make up a new MAC address

ok, new mac address, both computers have different IPs now and I can ping them both.

they are both connected to the internet, but in network connections its show "internet gateway" as connecting.

I can access shared documents on the primary computer from the secondary computer, but not the other way around. The secondary computers C drive is shared but I can't access it from my network places.

If I use \\FCSURPLUS it does open up in windows explorer.

Im not sure what ive done now it's only semi working.

now that you have established a network connection between the two, the next step (since there has been alot of settings tested during the troubleshooting) is to start from square one.
Remove all your shares, verify firewall settings (file and printer sharing), create your shares again (this will default the ACL for the share) and try again.
