Forum Search is lame and can't be restricted to THIS forum only
« on: December 27, 2009, 06:04:42 PM »

Why is this D-Link forum (beta) software so freaking lame that when you search, you search ALL forums and not just the one you're either currently in, or allowed to choose from "Advanced Search" (you are given the comical "choose a board to search or search all" and there is a single "check all" box, NO other forums listed). However, viewing the source code, I see a butt-load of forums (which are all hidden).

This is on Windows 7 and IE8.

I didn't know where else to post this, as there isn't a forum to address FORUM issues it seems. LOL.  ???

Have you looked hard enough? Try clicking on the search menu and go to Advanced Search. In case you still can't find it I can post a picture for you.

if you click on 'choose a board to search or search all' it opens the list.

if it doesen't, well, stop using IE and Windows, it sucks.

I couldn't agree more. Microsoft fails harder than the 1.32NA firmware. What you need to do is install a real operating system (Such as one based on linux) and start using a real browser (such as Firefox). It isn't strange if things don't work if the operating system and browser you are using are so full of errors they are in practice unusable.

Uhm... I'm now using Firefox 3.5.6 and XP with the same results.

Are you kidding? I can't even attach/upload a screen shot here!? I have to link to an external URL?? UGH. stupid.

Oh. Jesus H Christ on a popsicle stick. This is one of the most unintuitive r3tarded web forms I've ever seen...

You actually have to click the freaking text that says "Choose a board to search in, or search all" yet this isn't clear it's an actionable item, nor is it indicated it's even a hyperlink TO click unless you actually roll over it.

A sane GUI would have used the checkbox or other form element as the indicator. Or a "CLICK HERE TO CHOOSE A BOARD TO SEARCH IN". As it stands, it looks like a title to a list of checkboxes below.

Its the default search page with a default web interface for the SMF builletin board software.  Many other sites that use the SMF software have the exact same thing.  If we had the ability to change the skin of the board, it might look a little more intuative.  I go to one site that has a custom skin and there is a + sign next to the "Choose" link.

Perhaps it's time to change to a more robust, advanced and powerful forum like vBulletin?
SMF is a measly v1.1.11 and vBulletin is 4.0 revision.

There is even a SMF converter tool

Did you have a problem you needed help with or did you just come here to whine?

If the latter then I have some cheese for you to go with it.

Not sure how pointing out the frustrations of a ****py GUI when I'm already frustrated by an even $h!tt!er 1.32 firmware is whining. I even provided several solutions. I was SEARCHING (or trying to) the forums for answers to my questions before posting them.

So yes, the immediate problems I need help with are these (aside from the whole DNS 1.32NA debacle):
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9274
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9932.0

And while we're on this topic of things that SMF bulletin has lacking and vBulletin has fixed is that in vBulletin, I can choose a quick drop-down of threads that I've posted and ones I'm watching.  I had to hunt around for those two posts there.

You running 132NA or 132NA beta 9?

The beta 9 fixes problems that were in the released version.

If you don't have it and want to try the beta: 132NAbeta9

I would hope it fixes problems that were in the released version, otherwise there'd be no point in releasing it *wink*.

However, with frightening disclaimers such as:
Quote
Warning: This code is used at your own risk. D-Link is not responsible for damage caused to your router or network through its use.
The following beta firmware is provided on a trial basis only and without any kind of warranty. It is heavily advised not to use this beta firmware for any critical purpose.
By downloading the beta firmware file, you expressly agree that the use of the firmware is at your own risk and discretion.
It is not supported through the normal support channels. All questions, comments and issues should be directed to this board.
I will wait for an official release. I've got enough problems with a "sanctioned" 1.32NA as it is, I don't need more grief from some beta software.  Besides, it's on beta 9, there can't be that many more betas till an official release can there be?

I and many others have been using the beta since it was released without issue.
You can always flash back to the released 132NA.
