Router resetting constantly
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:14:37 AM »

Hello,

I have a Dir-825, Hardware Version: B1       Firmware Version: 2.02NA

The problem: the router ofter (too ofter) resets itself the same way as if I push the reset switch on the back. The D-Link light stays on (blue), the power too (orange for a while blue later), and the rest take a few seconds to return to the on lights.

I only use it wirelessly and currently have only 1 computer connected to it.
I thought it might be a MAC Snow Leopard issue (that's what I use) but it's not since when using another notebook (a simple PC notebook) the connection loosing happened the same.

Any one have a similar problem and/or know any solutions?

Thanks,
CoolFede.

Hi CoolFede,

I had a similar problem. I spoke to D-link and it seems that people there are also not so knowledgeable about it. They could not tell me what to do pinpointedly and bitting around the bush is not my style. However, I figured out that if I disable "Auto Connect" on my Laptop ( and this issue is only when  I used the 5GHz. network. It works fine with 2.4 otherwise) and started connecting manually after my Laptop boots up. And this seems to be working properly after then. I have been using like this for a couple of months and not did I have encountered the same problem. I hope Dlink fixes this bug in their updated firmware.

Also after I changed the position of the router and hung it as high as I could, the connectivity has been very stable and I am able to get like 30% signal strength and 165Mbps speed and it goes as high as 35% signal strength and 246Mbps at times.....It means that if you hang your router as far and as high as possible from your modem/pc, it renders at a good speed and signal strength.......However, I am still not satisfied with it giving me only 30% signal strength.....70% is lost.....and I know there are a no. of factors afftecting it.....but at this strength and speed I m able to stream HD content from Net without interruptions and so I am OK for the time being....

Thanks for the reply Kamlesh.

It's great to finally have a response.
I mostly use a MAC notebook and this happens to me, but it also happens when I use a regular PC notebook so i'll try what you say and see if the situations changes.
I really look forward to have a firmware update to fix this.
Regards!

Nothing worked and it keep's happening and happening...
Does anyone have any thoughts?

It's not a small thing to loose connection 20 times a day or more depending on the router's mood.

Please help.

I'm not saying it will definitely work or that it makes all the problems go away but it seems the power connector is weak.

I have the A rev and i noticed it was rebooting randomly and having all kinds of problems.  One time I went to unplug and replug it in and as I was moving it, it rebooted.  I tried some things and eventually found that if I bumped the power plug on the back of the router, it would reboot.

Worth a shot.  I'm probably not the only one with this defect.

Also turning off DNS relay like others have said helped tremendously!

I had a similar problem with the constant loss of connections and apparent resets with RevB 2.02NA. This was only occurring on the 2.4GHz band. I finally identified the culprit: Sony's S-AIR wireless home theatre system. If you are using S-AIR and are suffering from this problem, go to google and search for S-AIR wifi interference. Eventually, I had to explicitly turn off autoscan and go with channel 11. Interestingly, when I turned off autoscan for the 2.4GHz band, I could not connect on the 5GHz band until I turned off its autoscan.

The router is now rock solid and fast. Hope this helps.

Also make sure on both wireless channels of the dir-825 disable the "auto channel scan" or whatever it is called.

This dumb feature will cause the router to switch channels while you are connected, causing your wireless to drop connection from time to time.  Turn it off!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for all the tips.

I tried everything and it keeps happening.

It's not just the I loose the wifi connection and had to re-connect.
The whole router resets itself. Sometimes the first 2 lights (after the D-link logo) which I think are power and cable connection stay on, colored orange for a while and then turn back to the regular blue which is the correct state, sometimes they stay blue all the time and some times the only light that will stay on, colored orange, is the power light. And other times the power is blue and the second is orange and all others are off.

Every time, it's exactly the same as if I would have reseted (or turn off and then on again) the router (meaning the until it gets back to normal I can not use any connections, wired or wireless).

I really don't know what to do. And it keeps happening over and over again.  ???

maybe it's overheating?

remember seeing  a post a while back in the dd-wrt forums. A person had taken apart the dlink to identify the chipsets used and noticed by the thermal grease, that the heatsink wasn't even making contact with the chipset.

I haven't opened it but I can tell by touching it that is just warm as usual.

I've felt it cold during the times it reseted itself many times so I doubt it's temperature related.

I'm kind of desperate right now.

Should I trough it to the trash and buy a Cisco?
I'm not sure right now that I made the correct choice when buying D-link rather than Cisco.
I have a Cisco at the office and haven't have a single problem. I had at home another Cisco for more than 4 years and didn't have any problem for that time ... so I'm kind of regretting this purchase.

Of course, before I trough it away, I'll open it and see if there's something loose inside or a heatsink problem. But not before since it'd void the warranty.

Your problem sounds very similar to a problem I had with a Linksys WRT54GX2 wireless router. It had worked flawlessly for years, but just recently began dropping connections. I was baffled until I started paying attention to the lights on the router. The power light would blink on an off. Sometimes it didn't cause the connection to be dropped, but other times it did. Sometimes it would cause the router to reboot.

After doing a bit of research, I found out that a blinking power light meant that the firmware had been corrupted. The only cure was to reflash the firmware. Unfortunately, the connection was lost in the middle of reflashing, which bricked the router. And that's why I now have a DIR-825.  ;)

I had a similar issue with a many years working WRT54G router, but it had worked for many many years before having any issue.
I don't know if I mentioned this, but this D-link router can't have more than 3 months ... so it's more frustrating.

I own the Dir-825, hardware version A. When I got the item with firmware 1.01, connections dropped tremendously. I upgraded to firmware 1.11NA so as to solve the problem but this made it even worse. Connections dropped even more and other persons were complaining since they also shared the internet connection via the router. I always had to keep on physically powering off the router and plugging it back on. It got so bad that I installed an electrical switch on the plug that connected the router to an electrical outlet. So instead of pulling out the router's charger and then plugging it back on so as to reboot the router, I could now switch off the power supply.

However it has been a week and a half thus far and I have not had to reset the router. This is of course a world record for me since I had to reset this router every 2 days or so. I'm not sure if it's a fluke or what but I'll tell you what I did. I first saved the router settings to my hard drive. Then I upgraded the router's firmware to version 1.12NA. Then I upgraded to firmware version to 1.13NA right after.I then reloaded the router's settings that I saved on my hard drive. In the advanced tab of the router's webpage I went into the Qos settings. I unticked "Automatic Upload Speed" and I set the manual uplink speed to 360 kbps. My acutal uplink speed is 256 kbps but I just set the uplink a little higher to see what would be the effect. Thus far there has been no ill effect of doing such. In the end the router has not dropped connections or stopped being accessible via it's webpage.
