DWA-552 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64
« on: December 29, 2009, 10:44:21 AM »

I just rebuilt my computer and installed windows 7 ultimate x64 on it.  I updated my router to the DIR-655 and the card to the DWA-552.  The card worked (after I got the windows 7 driver from D-LINK) for a couple of hours and then stopped working all together.

I have:
Intel DP55WG MoBo
i7 860 core
nvidia 250 gts
4 gb ddr3 ram

When I turn on my computer all of my networks are available (neighbours etc.) so I try to connect to my network.  It asks for the passphrase and then when I hit okay it immediately says "Windows was unable to connect to [My SSID]"
I've reinstalled the card, the drivers, put in atheros drivers, moved the pci slot, reset my wlan services.
It doesn't even work when the network is unsecured.  Also, when it fails, I have to disable the card and re-enable it so that it can see any network again.

Getting frustrated.

Just tried booting in safe mode and installing drivers there, no luck.

Not sure what happened, I spent an hour and a half with D-LINK tech support, uninstalled and reinstalled v.1.60 of the drivers multiple times, disabled IPv6 and unsecured the router and now I can connect.  Finally.

I have had the same problem and want to throw my card under a bus. So frustrating. It keeps cutting in and out.

I've got mine working now.  Not sure exactly how or what process I did.

Here's the specs though

Driver is athrx.sys and vwifibus.sys

Driver version is 8.0.0.162 by WinDDK

I have it installed with the DLINK software from version 1.60 driver on their website (open and run the setup.exe file in windows vista compatibility)

It dropped for a few minutes and then it has been holding for about 6.5 hours now.

I'll update tomorrow.

Hi kerrmatt,

Is all you did use the 1.60 driver from the website? Did you just run the regular set up and have it work?

Guys, there are rather lengthy posts talking about this exact issue.  I have the same experience, and tried what you did.  At the moment I can get it to run for a day or so, but without fail it eventually dies or causes my PC to lock up.

What motherboard are you using?  I'm using a P55D Asus.  I found that updating the mobo bios drivers bought me a little more time than relying on the dlink drivers alone, but still haven't fixed the root cause which I believe is still in the Dlink drivers.

Also, when I contacted Dlink they shipped me a new card, that card has exactly the same problem so all it did was cost me money for shipping so I suggest you don't go down that path.

So, same problem as stated above.  I had the card working for about a day and then it failed on me.  No ideas, nothing has changed since it was working.

Hey guys, I have the DIR-655 router as well and DIR-552 wireless card.. And it works for about 20 mins when I am downloading s*** on steam, and then it shows a little red X in the bottom corner.. and I am unable to scan for networks at all. I put the computer to sleep and wake it up again and it connects to my home network fine again.. try it again and red X again.. Hopefully they find something to fix this garbage.. Oh I have win 7 ultimate 64-bit too.

Thx

Hi All,

I know that this sounds pathetic, but besides posting in the forum, has anyone using the DWA-552 Card in the Windows 7 Ultimate or simply 64-bit enviroment called D-Link Support and allowed them to help you or at least get an RMA from them?

Perhaps, they can see that the people writing the drivers for the 64-bit environment, can't and they should hire different programmers, or they will need to post to the web-site, that D-Link doesn't support the DWA-552 in the Windows 7 64-bit environment.

Just a thought.

SOLUTION FOUND

1. All I did was download Vista drivers. 7.7.0.396.. Installed it and it has been running solid  for 3 days straight without a disconnect.. and it connects at 300MB/s as well.

Hope this works for you as it worked for me!

thx.
