Multiple DAP-1522 + DIR 655 = Enormous Headache?
« on: December 30, 2009, 07:35:07 AM »

So here's the deal.  All these devices are brand new.

I have a D-Link DIR-655, and four DAP-1522's.  Yes, four of them.  I'll get to that later.  I've setup the 655 to use WPA2 Only, AES encryption.  I manually setup the first DAP-1522 to connect, it does, and the connection is nice and stable.  Good speed all around.

I go to setup the second 1522.  I do it exactly like the first, except using a different device name and ip address.  It connects just fine.  I can pull a DHCP address to my computer, I can even get on the web.  The problem is, it is terribly slow.  Also, these devices are about 10 feet from the router, so range shouldn't be the problem.  My first bridge clocks in at around 120mbps, while my second clocks in at around 400kbps.  Yes, 400 kilobits per second.

I'm at a loss.  I've already called D-Link, who kept transferring me to higher-techs, until they gave up and gave me the HQ # to call during business hours (will try that today).

I've updated the firmware.  I've turned on and off every option I can find in the 655 (uPNP, SPI, Short GI, etc.)  Nothing solves the incredible slowness.

I was thinking it was an issue with the unit, so I pull out another BRAND NEW 1522, same result.  I thought, maybe the first 1522 is causing interference?  I unplug it, and try again, same result-very slow.  I'm missing something here.  Has anyone setup multiple 1522's without issue?  If so, what security settings did you use?  Does anyone have any other ideas, I would really love to get this figured out!

I finally got this working.  I don't know if this will work with everyone, but it worked for me.  I ended up manually setting my Wireless Channel to 1, instead of Auto.  I did a site survey with one of the bridges, and checked to make sure there weren't any other SSID's around me on the same channel.  I've also read that 1,6, and 11 seem to have the fastest speeds (who knows if that's true).

So yeah, I ended up selecting channel 1 in the Wireless Channel option on the Wireless Settings page of my DIR-655.

Just in case you'd like to know all the wireless settings, this is what I have and is working:

802.11 Mode:  Mixed 802.11 and 802.11g
Enable Auto Channel Scan: UNCHECKED
Wireless Channel: 2.412GHz - CH 1
Transmission Rate: Best (automatic)
Channel Width: Auto 20/40MHz
Visibility Status: Visible
Security Mode: WPA-Personal
WPA Mode: WPA2 Only
Cipher Type: AES
Group Key Update Interval: 3600

My bridge settings are nothing special, static IP's.  On one of them I have the default gateway filled in with my DIR-655's IP address, on the other I don't.  I doubt this has much affect.  I also didn't change the advanced Wireless settings in either device, I left Short GI checked.

In case this helps, my advanced wireless settings are:
Transmit Power: High
Beacon Period: 100
RTS Threshold: 2346
Fragmentation Threshold: 2346
STIM Interval: 1
WLAN Partition: UNCHECKED
WMM Enable: CHECKED
Short GI: CHECKED
Extra Wireless Protection: CHECKED

Good luck!!
