I see DLink has released a new version of FW for the 4500. Kewl.
I would recommend if your 4500 is working well for you at this time with what is currently loaded, not to update.
Not all issues seen on the 4500 are FW related and should be fully investigated with factory resets and minor configurations, help from the forums and until you can really deem the situation reason for an update.
Check out the forums, ask questions, SEARCH is your friend, read the STICKYs. There is great information out here and were all willing to help each other to find the answers and fix the problems.

Haven't had any problems with 1.23 Ive been stress testing it all day with 13 networked devices.

Good to hear. Do you think it is performing better than 1.22? I mean the performance should be the same unless they tweak some hidden settings that they did not tell us.
-
No wired/wireless drops?
Anyways I just upgraded to 1.23NA. I'll see how this performs today.
Back at 1.22NA, I found quite a few of

[INFO] Wed Aug 04 01:38:29 2010 Above message repeated 9 times
I figured it was when it dropped my connection. Not really sure what was up with that and my DGL-4500 is A2. And I know this router has been out for quite a while. Should have been enough time for DLink to fix any of the common issues.
-
True that. I personally would have liked it if D link would have recall the router and re released a better one without issues, But yet again those issues were never found, they were only users issues. So I think in D links part they saw the router has it had no problems. My router does not give me any problems I love it and will continue to love it until they introduce the new one.
-
Yea I had a pretty flawless DGL-4300. I believe it is still on a fairly old firmware and it never drops anything. So I figured the DGL-4500 would do the same. However I read a lot of ppl were having connection drops while upgrading to certain firmwares.
-
Is it just me or is there a typo in this firmware? Anyways once you login the router and you check the firmware it says Firmware Version : 1.23NA, 2010/04/15 Last time I check the firmware was released august 5. So clearly there is a mistake in this firmware, If I am mistaken please can someone explain this for me. Anyways if I am not mistaken I must say that the firmware writers are not very good at there jobs.
-
Yes I noticed that also that there is a typo with the date.
-
I presume that they had built this version back in April and for unknown reasons as of yet, they just released it to the public. Just because they built it then doesn't mean the date has to be close to actual release to public date. They could have been doing there own testing since then and with all the development and issues seen just finalized it then. We were given beta builds for v1.21 that lead up to v1.22. Not sure why the Mod's didn't say anything as I was surprised to see that one of the users posted a message about it. It does seem kind of strange to build something and date it 4 months prior to actual release date.
-
Strange yes. Specailly since..well if those release notes are the only changes, it seems pretty pointless. I bet alot of people will update just because its "the newest one". Don't get me wrong, I am glad D-link is still releasing updates for the 4500, but just seems..its like alot of work for something so un-important.
-
I agree, why not release something that helps improve the unit and not to say the least fixes something. ???
-
D link should put more work into increasing performances and fixing as they go. I am starting to think they only have 1 group of firmware writers for like 50 + D link routers. Anyways these forums are so active and full of awesome members, I wonder why aren't the mods patrolling no more and posting.
-
What is "NA" stands for?
-
What is "NA" stands for?
It means the firmware is a North American release. Meaning it should only be installed in a N/A router.
And so I quote. "This firmware is engineered for North American products only.
Using this firmware on a device outside of North America will void your warranty and may render the device unusable.
Please contact the D-Link office in your region for firmware updates that are compatible with your D-Link product."

ShHHhh!, just LookIntoMyEyees!

Oh, ok, I guess dlink has better ideas...no wonder it confuses.
wiki: N/A (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N/A)
Any way, are these 2 items in changes log is the only changed in this version? doesn't look much for releasing a whole new version...
-
I have this feeling in a couple months something new is going to come out and thats what all the firmware coders are. Who knows though. I still love my 4500 ;D
-
What did you mean by something new and thats all the firmware coders are? What? I got lost, I say shh and just LookIntoMyEyees.
Btw tricky this is none forum related xD but if you have cod waw lets hope on and shoot up some zombies.
It never hurts a man to get off topic or does it? The world will never know! As for the sigs don't worry I am testing peoples reactions to them if you guys don't like them and wish them to be removed I will do so.

EEEKK!! whats with that Angry macho face, (Means no sig :o )
-
Umm..well..his Sig and no more less on topic then a certian Halo character. ::grin::
But yea, back on topic, what I meant is I wonder if the reason the release is late and less then impressive is they(the encoders) got pulled off the 4500 and put on something new? So maybe Dlink was waiting for them to have time to finish it..but then went..::meh:: and just released it. I think that release date matches up when they stopped releasing updates for the 4300 no?
-
Stress testing v1.23NA for one full day now, so far works solid, same as v1.22NA, no issues to report.

You actually talking about new hardware...
Well, not surprising as 4500 is how old already, 2-3 years? I'm surprised it took them that long to cook up something better...
P.S. this is still off topic though.

I needed to add my input on this new FW release.... IT ROCKS!
Just bought my DGL-4500 last week (from a US vendor). Since I hooked it up and clicked the upgrade firmware button during the setup I've been miserable. It upgraded to only FW1.15 (I live outside the US so maybe this was the latest FW on the closest FW source). I think it had FW1.02 in there before I clicked the button.
Ever since then I have experienced all of the following problems:- Some website cannot be displayed and NEVER timeout (loading icon forever) (eg. www.delta.com)
- Most websites load fine, but some images on some websites never load (loading icon forever)
- My Thunderbird email client cannot connect to ANY of my email hosts to download new email (three separate email providers). Thunderbird makes a connection but eventually times out downloading the email
- WireShark captures indicated timesouts; checksum errors on packets; missing previous segment warnings
I tried reset to default immediately before loading the FW and immediately afterwards. Nothing seemed to help. I disabled any feature I wasn't using, but the above pattern was always there. From two different wired PCs. My iPhone connected over WiFi was able to load the mobile versions of the delta.com site.
Upgraded to FW1.22NA since it appeared to be very stable (based on comments in another thread). Same issues.
Downgraded to FW1.20NA... same.
Each time I would restore defaults before loading the FW bin file, and then restore defaults immediately after the load rebooted. Nothing helped.... until I loaded FW1.23NA.
So far, everything is working EXACTLY as I would expect. The two sites that I COULD NOT load on my Firefox nor my IE8 browser... delta.com and partycity.com... Both loaded on my first try!
Needless to say, (so far) I am VERY happy with FW1.23NA. If anything changes... I will update this thread. Fingers crossed for now.
Now, why did I need to go through all that pain? The difference between FW1.22 and FW1.23 are not significant, but they were night & day for my router.
I see one step that I did differently on the last FW load... immediately after loading the FW and the router had rebooted... I pulled the power connection because I had to leave the house and didn't want to leave an unconfigured/unpassworded router connected to my network. But I don't believe a cold boot is required for a FW update, is it?
If anyone knows WHY my router was running so badly under all the previous FW versions I tried... please chime in.
I might try loading an earlier version just to see if I can re-create the issue, but then again... why tempt fate?

If anyone knows WHY my router was running so badly under all the previous FW versions I tried... please chime in.
It's because started with v1.12 the quality of FW went down hill at exponential rate. Only since v1.22 it brought back this router to life. I think upgrading to v1.23 fixed all the problems was an coincident, if you'd downgrade to v1.22 and confirm that the problem remains, then I'll take my words back.
-
I'm still running absolutely perfect on 1.23 since release day with all my networked connections.
-
I'm still running absolutely perfect on 1.23 since release day with all my networked connections.
Same here I did mention I got a restart on 1.22 N/A a while back, But with 1.23. N/A It has been very stable and good so far. 6 Days & counting.
-
I wish I could brag on how long my router has been up, but I play with it so much its never up for longer then a few days. LOL
-
I did have have a problem but it wasn't the router instead my cable modem wasn't getting good Signal To Noise Ratio levels and I needed to double booster my connection. I know it sounds crazy I have two booster's on the run but it's working freaking great and my levels are almost perfect now in every aspect.
-
Wow two boosters do sound crazy! I got no boosters in my line, unless there is one outside. Well Tricky I can't brag no more I had to restart to test a few things oh well. 3 hours and counting :)
-
Hmm, boosters don't increase your signal to noise ratio (SNR) because all it does it amplify your noise as much as amplify your signal, hence, keeping your signal to noise ratio the same. It would be the equivalent of having a scratched CD so turning the volume full blast. Sure, you can hear it better, but its skill going to skip. And if anything, since its another connection point, its just going to make it worse, just like talking through a bull horn makes your voice less clear. On top of that, it adds resistance, increase your transmit or TX levels, and makes your receive or RX levels out of specs. I mean the proofs in the pudding, so if it works, cool, but don't be surprised if you have issues.
-
Trikein You couldn't be more wrong because all my levels are well within spec and all increased due to the extra booster. My SNR increased by almost 5db from 27db which it keep loosing connection to 32-33db constant. Downstream power level went from -6db to +3db and my upstream power went from 45db to 50db. All those specs are pretty good in my book and without a doubt are working perfectly for the last week. As for connection speed I have cox 30D/5U and real world testing is 34D/8U. I couldn't be happier my Internet finally works constantly due to two boosters on my run. So before you start bashing me because you think it's a bad idea my numbers just don't lie. I will always keep my eye on the power figures because I know to much power is going to kill my modem but as for now it's not even close to any danger zone.

-
::laugh:: What ever man, I wasn't lieing. I don't know what kind of "booster" you have that increasing a RX of 4.5dh. I was thinking you meant a inhouse amp, which usually increases by 10-20dB, something like this
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=coax+amp&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=14519722769657818361&ei=gaZmTMjzK4e4sQP3_L2ZDQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCYQ8wIwAA#
But like I said, if it works for you, cool. But it isn't best case.
-
I'm using two SVI Digital Amps that are both from COX. The first amp hits the run 15ft from entrance of the house. The second amp hits over 80ft of run later straight off the wall outlet and then the amped signal run goes another 10ft to my DC-4 Tap which then hits the modem and the 4db lost goes to the HD box. You say it isn't the best case but you are wrong in my situation it has worked out to be the base scenario.
-
Well then cool. When I say best case scenario, I mean it. Not best practicle scenario. If you found the best practicle scenario, then props. :-) Was going to write a long retort, but I just got off a 13hour shift = don't care. Plus its off topic to OP.
-
No doubt I wasn't trying to argue with you rather than saying I kind of found an unorthodox solution to the problems that has worked out extremely well.
-

Well yea, there is currently no issues with the Dgl 4500. They have fixed the restart and all the issues. Well we can't never say its perfect, it stills has it's flaws. What issues are you experiencing? As for me I got no issues, My router is at 95% and running smooth.
-
My router has been a solid performer since the 1.23 NA release.
Now if dlink could work on some of the wish list items that would be awesome.
-
I''ve been running firmware 1.15 with no issues for a while. Will this version do anything for me? I have around seventy devices on my network with no problems from my DGL4500 with the 1.15 firmware.
The one thing I need is more DHCP reservations instead of the current 24 limit with my firmware. Does the new one increase the reservations? When I had a DGL4300 the reservation limit was much higher.
-
not bad

Although the reservation limit was much higher on the DGL4300, This ain't true on the Dgl 4500. I really doubt that the latest firmware 1.23N/A increases the DHCP reservation. So for now you will have to stick to it as it is.
