Title: DIR-825 Dropping Connection, Latest Firmware
Post by: ConallofUlster on February 15, 2013, 08:20:29 PM
Hey,

I've been having some issues with my DIR-825, it's been intermittently dropping internet connection.  This is across multiple OS (Win 7, Ps3 OS, iOS, etc.  A hard reset doesn't really fix the issue and the firmware says it's the latest version (I believe Jan 12, 2012).
I know this isn't a lot to go by, but any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Conall

Link>Welcome! (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=41537.0)
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=47512.0) version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
Set Time and Time Zone under Tools/Time.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

My hardware version is: B1 and came with firmware 2.05NA
My current firmware is: 2.07NA
My region is Atlantic Canada/North America depending on how they sort it
My connections are wireless, but there is a laptop that is connected via wire.

I believe my ISP Service is cable
My ISP modem is stand alone
My ISP modem is a Motorola Sb5101

Just out of curiosity, why not use Chrome?
I did most of a number of these steps (I do use online gaming so I left QoS enabled).
I noticed that for setting time, I couldn't select 2013.

If there are any t.v. line splitters before the ISP modem, these will reduce the signal. Remove them or if one is needed, use a good quality splitter. Any chance your ISP supports Bring Your Own Modem? If so, I recommend getting into a Motorla SB 6120, 6121, or 6141.

Just out of curiosity, why not use Chrome? Chromes is been known to cause issues during interaction with the routers web page. Especially while performing FW upgrades.
I did most of a number of these steps (I do use online gaming so I left QoS enabled).
I would review this:Gaming and QoS for XBL (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=42011.0)

I noticed that for setting time, I couldn't select 2013. Does using an NTP server bring the router to a correct date and time? We are tracking this issue: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51932.0 (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51932.0)

Mine didn't just drop the Internet Connection....it dropp ALL wired connections.

I think we got DIR 825s with a putrid batch of Wired controllers.  Did you happen to buy yours from NewEgg in the past month???

As of right now, things seem to be working out.  My microwave still causes a major drop in connection, but I don't imagine there's anything I can do about that with an unshielded microwave.
The QoS hasn't really be worked out much since I've not had a lot of time to game recently.

Thanks for checking in though

Greetings, have the similar issues with my router.

DIR-825, B1
Firmware Version: 2.09WW

My Region: Ukraine
Connection type: Russia PPoE Dual Access via wire to my Windows PC.

Overall connection is fine, however sometimes, often, it is loosing 3 or 5 packets in a row, witch in my case caused the Battle.net lose it's connection and as consequences I'm loosing my ongoing games and rating.
My ISP have assured me that their hardware works fine.

QoS and all it's options is OFF.
SPI is OFF
Plug and Play is OFF
Firewall set in Endpoint Independent for both options.
IPv4 Multicast Streams is ON

Suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you perform a factory reset before and after sending the FW update using IE? And did you configure the router from scratch afterwards?

What site did you get v2.09WW from?

Nope, I didn't perform factory reset. I usually update FW using Firefox.
I've restored my settings from previously saved configuration file.

The URL i get FW from is http://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-825/Firmware/

Thanks for concerning.

I recommend doing a factory reset before and after sending the FW file then set up from scratch.

Lets us know how this work and if it helps...

Did as you suggested. All was fine, i was hoping it finally worked, until I started to use Skype, that's when the packets began to disappear again :(. There are 3 packets in a row. Enough to lose connection with the battle.net :(. I've done a small investigation: started the ping command during the game with the Skype call and without - during the Skype calls connection was usually dropping.

Settings are still the same:

QoS and all it's options is OFF.
SPI is OFF
Plug and Play is OFF
Firewall set in Endpoint Independent for both options.
IPv4 Multicast Streams is ON

Is there any additional care i can apply to my router ? Maybe some monitoring on my side could help you to find a reason?

Thanks for collaboration.

You need to turn on uPnP. This should help.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Greetings! Same problem as everyone else.

Updated to 2.09 revB1
ISP: Delta Cable
Modem: ISP provided Motorola unit
Speed: 20Mbits

Tried all the settings you and the others posted.

But still have downloads randomly dropping and skype calls d/cing.

Really should have stuck with 2.05 xD

EDIT: Tried checking the router log while downloading this shows up when it fails:

Blocked incoming TCP SynAck packet from 198.47.108.10:443 to 24.207.49.194:65360 with unexpected sequence

Any thoughts?

I would have your ISP physically check the cable going from out side into the ISP modem. Have them check the signal. Ensure that there are no t.v. line splitters on the line as these can intruduce noise or lower the signal going into the ISP modem.

Tried downgrading back to 2.05.

Everything seems to be working fine again.

Speeds are considerably slower than usual though.

Hmmm problems with d/cing have started to reoccur again. Now the router log is full of those blocking unexpected sequence errors.

@FurryNutz

Yes, factory resets were done before each upgrade/downgrade.

Region is Lower Mainland, BC, Canada.

Modem is a Motorola Surfboard SB5101. We've had it for several years now.

Have your ISP check lines and maybe get into a new modem. They have a SB 6 series thats really good.
The 825 I had works great on these modems.

Only reasons of disconnections like this would be ISP related.
Title: Re: DIR-825 Dropping Connection, Latest Firmware
Post by: naughtynazgul on May 12, 2013, 02:40:46 PM
Really? Read on some other forums that it could be a series of IP attacks from somewhere?
Title: Re: DIR-825 Dropping Connection, Latest Firmware
Post by: FurryNutz on May 12, 2013, 02:55:25 PM
Even if it's attacks, thats still ISP related and they should be able to help block some of that, However if the router is reporting some or reporting issues of a disconnect or anything related, it's just doing what it's designed to do by logging it.

I would have your ISP physically check your Cable lines, check the signal going into the router and I recommend if you can buy your own modem, do it. The SB 6 series are good modems. I have tested 3 models.

Also remove any TV line splitters if present. These can reduce signal and introduce noise on the line.

@ConallofUlster and @FurryNutz,

Saw your posts as I was looking for a solution to the problem myself.
I am running a twonky mediaserver on my dLink DNS-323 NAS - and uses dLinks DIR-825 router.

Some time ago I updated both the twonky software and the router software. Weeks later I streamed a film from the NAS and discovered that my Samsung SMART TV lost connection to the twonky mediaserver every 30 minutes.

Suspecting twonky for causing the problem, I spend some time trying out other twonky software versions - but with no luck. Almost giving up, I started looking into the router firmware version. After some time I DISABLED Multicast Streams in the router - and "voila" it worked Again.

I noticed that other DIR-825 users experincing these kind of problems bump into them after upgrader to firmware versions higher than 2.05 (I upgraded to 2.06 but solved it - hopefully - without having to downgrade but disabling Multicast Streams instead).

Hope this is of use.

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

So Disabling Multi-cast Stream fixed the problem and upgrading to v2.06?

Does the TV run wireless or wired connection to the 825?
