Hello,
I never had problems with my DGL-5500 until I tried to hook up my Xbox One. It loses connection and when it does, so does everything else. What is happening here?
-
I've got an xbox one hooked up to mines and haven't had this happen. I played for at least 10 hrs between myself and everyone in my household. My only issue was the NAT switching from open to strict half way thru the day.
-
Is this wired or wireless.
I helped someone hook up a XB1 last night on a 868L and noticed that moderate NAT was present when going from OPEN NAT on wireless to the wired connection on the XBL. Did a factory reset on the XB1 and after two more power cycles, finally got OPEN NAT one the wired connection...
-
D-Link helped me by setting the cipher type to just TKIP. They said the Samsung Galaxy S4 has the same issue, disconnecting everything on the network. They are working on a new firmware for these devices.
My NAT was read as strict. Doesn't seem to affect anything.
-
So they are saying that the XB1 wireless work around is TPIK? Is the XBL wired or wirless to the 5500?
-
I guess, that's what worked when we changed the settings. My X1 is over wireless 2.4Ghz.
How do I open up the NAT on the DGL-5500? That's something I never bothered with for my consoles.
-
Does the XB1 support the 5Ghz radio? Just curious...
NAT should be your main priority for all consoles...
NAT should be open already..
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
- What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
- What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
- What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
-
Yes it does 5GHz but I have it on another level of my house right now. I should look into an amplifier.
Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
•What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
Cox Cable
•What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Arris Touchstone TM502G
•What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Approx 7.5Mbps UP and 32Mbps Down

I believe your model modem has a built in router and is probably the source of Moderate or strict NAT:
- If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/). To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Do you have phone service or any other service thru this modem?
FYI:
Arris Cable Modems and External Routers (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=50682.0)
-
I called Cox Cable and they want to send me a new Docsis 3 modem. I talked to the rep and he told me that I currently do not have a router in my Arris. We do have our land line phone service through the modem. I informed him that I have my own router.
Do you know what I have to do in the DGL-5500 to loosen the NAT?
-
Have you guys set up port forwarding rules???? If not you may try that, follow Furrys' instructions. Worked well on the 360, should work for the "1"

I presume PF may or may not be needed. I managed to help my friend get his XB1 NAT open on his router after about 2 hours of trying to figure out why it wouldn't connect correctly via LAN cable. Wireless it would however plugging in the LAN cable, Moderate NAT was seen. I looked at the connection status on his router (DIR-868L) and saw that the wireless was still connected when the LAN cable was connected. Could not figure out why wireless was connected still. Did everything we could thing off. Eventually told him to contact XBL support and ask whey the wireless on the XB1 was still connected when LAN cable was connected and preferred. Haven't heard back yet.
Just thought I'd share this experience should anyone see this with there XB1. We presume that when the LAN cable is used, the WiFi should not be connected or enabled. We believe this is the cause of Moderate NAT on XB1. I'll post back with results.
As for Greenhawk, we need to make sure that the ISP modem isn't doing any NAT'g and that the NAT is solely on the 5500. PF shouldn't bee needed on this model router as the SB system and uPnP should take care of the port configuration. I've had not needed to do this for my 2 xboxes. Just make sure they are connected and give a higher priority if you need if other devices are online at the same time.
Be sure to network factory reset the xbox as we've seen for some reason the xboxes are not fully clearing out the prior network settings and somehow gets hung up and causes Moderate NAT. Usually once the xbox is reset, Open NAT is seen.

Furry,
Just found this website http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_360_support/f/9/t/1625236.aspx (http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_360_support/f/9/t/1625236.aspx).
It appears there are 3 additional ports to open for the "1". I just have the usual port forwarding for the 360, my XBOX1 works fine and have open NAT. Don't know what the 3 other ports will do for the "1"
For the Xbox One, these three additional ports are also used:
500 (UDP)
3544 (UDP)
4500 (UDP)
-
Thanks Lex, found same info sarlier this am...i updated the XBL stickies with this link.
I presume the 5500 should be able to pick up on these ports automatically...maybe

Secondary DNS Server : 68.105.29.13
-
Yes, edited to not publish your IP addresses.
I believe your modem is bridged and the 5500 is getting a public IP address thus the NAT should be open on the xbox.
Is your XB1 wired or wireless connected to the 5500?
Factory reset the XB1. Disconnect the LAN cable from the XB1 and configure the XB1 to connect wirelessly to either radio on the 5500. Try 5Ghz first. Then check NAT status?
Let us know...
-
My XB1 is wireless right now and probably will stay that way. I am not sure how to reset the connection in the XB1. Maybe that will need a phone call to Xbox support later today. I do see that in Steam games on my desktop, COD reads my NAT is strict.
-
Is uPnP enabled?
Something isn't right on the 5500. Should be open.
Yes, please phone XB1 support and ask them about factory reset to be sure.
Only think I would try is to do a factory reset on the 5500. Turn every thing off accept for 1 wired LAN PC. Set up the router from scratch, just set up SSID and PW. Set SB and ABE for manual 100 and 10. Leave off SPI and all other settings as default.
Check COD on your PC as a better test and see if NAT is open or not.
After that, if NAT is still strict or moderate, might need to set up some PF and see if this helps.
-
COD shows open NAT type in Steam now. I haven't called Microsoft yet about the XB1, but Im sure it will be okay. Thanks for the help. Hopefully D-Link gets a firmware out that makes the DGL-5500 more compatible with certain devices that have this problem.
-
SO you got OPEN NAT on the PC?
Now now about the XB1?
-
I didn't mess with the XB1 last night, I was too busy playing Killer Instinct. Man I love that game. Anyway, I will post here when I manage to mess with it.
-
Furry just wanted to ask is you have tried 2 xb1 with no issues? I have one wired directly to my 5500, and another upstairs wired to my Dap-1522 access point. I was unable to get open nat on both without putting the second one in the dmz. If not which ever one was powered on first would be open, and the other would show moderate or strict. Most of the time strict. I'm sure stream boost is on and upnp. Is there anything you would suggest to try? Also on the latest firmware.
-
I dont have the XB1 so you guys will be the experienced ones here when it comes to the XB1. From what i know, I had a similar experience with setting up my friends XB1 and for some reason could not get open NAT on a wired connection to a DIR-868L bridge. Also noticed the wireless connection was still going when the LAN cable was plugged in. Anyone see this?? We went back to the 360 and could get it connected with out issues. Really felt that this is a XB1 issue and possibly could be a FW issue however more or less a configuration as well. XB1 should be getting open NAT without having to go thru all this on the router. Even on DIR series w QoS, if the global rules are used and uPnP is enabled, open NAT should be seen yet we are seening priblems there to. Which leads me to think this is a XB1 issue.
And its hard to tell on the 5500 weather or not what wifi devices are connected. Makes me wonder if your wifi is going while the lan cable is connected too.

Hmmm...Ok well figured I'd ask since you know everything else lol. I actually spoke to a ms guy who told me he actually has 4 xb1's and 2 ps3's hooked up all with open NAT by doing port triggering instead of port forwarding and upnp. He sent me detailed instructions on how to do it for my 2 consoles so I will give it a try when I get home to see if it works.
-
Let us know how it goes and if it works, post the details on how to do so we can help others.
I wonder if setting up Virtual Server rules could help?
Good Luck.
-
so unfortunately I've tried every single thing I can think of to obtain open nat on 2 xb1 consoles and i've given up. 3 hours of my night went to waste. There's no port triggering option on the 5500 unless I'm over looking it. I may try to use my fios actiontec to see if it works on there since that router does have port triggering. don't have the patience to try tonight though
-
Thanks for trying.
Question, did you use the LAN port or WiFi to connect the XB1 to the 5500?
What the XB1 listed in the Networking DHCP client list? Either WiFi or LAN or both?
-
I have one connected to the lan port of 5500 and another connected the dap 1522 which is coming off a port on the 5500 also. I just read an interesting post on xbox.com that says something about putting the router into bridge mode finally fixed it for him. Not sure if thats an option for the setup I have. Maybe you can advise. Hope it's ok to post a link to another site here

Ya thats a ISP modem with built in router that is referred to there. And ya, if those aren't bridged correctly, and another external router connected you'll get double NAT:
Double NAT (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm) and How NAT Works (http://cognitiveanomalies.com/cisco-nat-how-nat-works/).
-
found another possible solution for NAT issues on xbox one that may help people. Haven't had a chance to check it out for myself but I will as soon as I get home. Heres the post.
Router & Modem make/model: Dlink DGL-5500
Wired or wireless: Both (1 wired console, 1 wireless)
Multiple consoles on the same network (Yes/No): Yes
I'm not sure if the Xbox Team is already working on these issues but because of this I've set both console power modes to "Energy-Saving" until a patch can resolve this. If the console power mode is "Instant-on" the system will not register UPnP with my router giving me a "Strict" NAT type. This happens to both consoles. By switching to "Energy-Saving" the console properly registers UPnP with my router and displays a "Open" NAT type and party chat etc. works as expected on both consoles. I hope the Xbox Team will be able to release an update to make the console properly register with UPnP when using the "Instant-on" feature because I'd like to go back to those settings at some point. I've also tried powering the console on from "Energy-Saving" mode and then switching back to "Instant-on" but the next day when I turn the console on again it's back to strict :( "Energy-Saving" is the only way to ensure both consoles always have an "Open" NAT on initial boot.
I also verified that running the multiplayer test followed by holding the triggers and bumpers does set it back to open again but it's a hassle to do that each time so I'll have to stick with "Energy-Saving" for now.
Seems like Microsoft just needs to have the Xbox do whatever the multiplayer hold triggers test does in the background each time the console resumes from instant-on?
That was posted by a member on xbox.com

Awesome info...will have my buddy take a look at this as well. Keep us posted.
BTW, the DGL-5500 is a router and not a router/modem unit. ::)
-
I wanted to confirm that switching to Energy Saving mode on my friends XB1 has resolved the Moderate nat issue and is now OPEN. Thank you Dyvurcz for finding that work around. I'll post this in the XBL stickies as well so people know. Hope MS will do something about that. I knew this wasn't a router issue. ::)
-
I've updated all the XBL stickies in the FAQ Library (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=304.0) with information regarding the Instant On issue and links to Xbox.com port information for the XB1. Enjoy.
-
Good stuff guys ;D Really like the flow and research that comes thru these forums.....ROCKIN ;)
Update:
So tried to play BF4 online tonight and X1 could not connect to the cloud. I added the additional port forwarding rules and rebooted the router and was able to multiplay BF4.
Here are the 3 additional ports I added:
500 (UDP)
3544 (UDP)
4500 (UDP)
Thus far UPNP is enabled and ALL port forwarding rules have been applied and have open NAT. Having some stuttering, not sure if it's my 5g wireless or XBOX servers?
I read the article about power saving mode vs Instant On. I tried both and still recieved an open NAT. Will keep an eye on it

Awesome! I've got help plenty of times here so I'm glad to be able to contribute for once lol 8)

Anyone seeing port 3075 instead of 3074 being used on a single XB1 session?
-
Got info back from D-Link, there testing of XB1 on the 5500 and a DIR-868L. All has open NAT using default settings on wired and WiFi. No crashing of routers reported.
They did mention the following:
The thread does touch on a few items that we cover in our NAT troubleshooting documentation on the Xbox One support site (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/browse/xbox-one/networking (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/browse/xbox-one/networking)), such as:
Try enabling port forwarding for UDP 3074, 3544, 4500 and 500 (some new ports added for Xbox One from what 360 used).
Failing that, try adding the console to the DMZ.
Ensure that you’re not double NAT’d (Customers don’t realize that their ISP supplied modem is actually a router.
Either setting the console into energy saving mode or pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds to do a hard reboot as some setting changes on the router or console might not take effect when coming out of standby on the Xbox One.
Pressing both triggers + both buttons on the controller in the Multiplayer Troubleshooter to refresh the NAT type of the console.
I finally got my friends XB1 fully connected last nite on OPEN NAT with this 2 DIR-868Ls so I hope he'll be good to go. Instant ON feature is disabled.
-
Got info back from D-Link, there testing of XB1 on the 5500 and a DIR-868L. All has open NAT using default settings on wired and WiFi. No crashing of routers reported.
Do you know how much testing they've done? As in, leave it hooked up for days and power down and up periodically to check the NAT. When I hooked up my Xbox One initially, it was reporting an open NAT. It wasn't until I checked again later that it had changed to strict.
On this topic, I did have a similar experience, not sure if it will help the OP or others. When I went to set up port forwarding, I did it in this order: set up the forwarded ports, saved, then set up the IP reservations for the Xbox One and saved. This caused the router to stop working. Even after a reset. I had to remove the port forwarding and IP reservation to get the router working again. I then did them in the opposite order: reserve IP, save, set up port forwarding, save. And that worked.
-
I don't know the content or duration of testing they and MS have done. All I now is that D-Link and MS have and are currently working with this router and I presume others to ensure both are working well using default settings. They didn't do any PFg or didn't seem to need it and only suggested PFg if default settings didn't work along with the other suggestions. In most cases, if the router is the only NAT, there isn't any need for PFg for XBL, at least with the 360. I presume the XB1 shouldn't either however anything is possible. If uPnP is enabled, this should handle most of the port behavior with connected devices with out PFg. I only recommend using the QoS on those routers that have that feature to handle the gaming and general traffic priorities if other devices are online while gaming.
NAT is a big issue and I've strived to help users understand that ISP modems can impact the use of external routers. I know you have a stand alone ISP modem, however some people don't so it makes it harder to configure routers to work with these modems with built in routers. Like my friend in CA, we got him 2 DIR-868Ls, one main router, the other in bridge mode for gaming. His ISP modem is a Motorola SB 6580 with built in router. We didn't get time to attempt to bridge it so we used the DMZ for the main host router. After going thru everything we got open NAT on his 360 and XB1. Ya, instant ON was disabled. We hope it keeps working. It sure is a process. ::)
Usually the process for setting up configurations on these routers are to start with reserving IPs. Then setting up the features that may be depended upon the IPs being reserved first.

Yeah. I figured that was the case. I think I just did it in the order of screens I happened to access. I thought I would post the wrong way to let others know that may cause an issue.

Thank you for sharing.

One experience I would like to share on the NAT issues with XBone, the network setting say that I have strict NAT, but Call of Duty says my NAT is open. I might not put too much stock in the systems settings if the game says you are fine.

Good point. It's just the strict NAT often causes an error when you try to enable party chat.

Any try this to change NAT status?
Pressing both triggers + both buttons on the controller in the Multiplayer Troubleshooter to refresh the NAT type of the console.
-
Just out of curiosity what 2 buttons? The former 'back' and 'start' buttons?
-
Don't know...i presume maybe the front bumper buttons? They should have specified. ::)

Yes. I did that last night and it did not change my NAT. However, I have seen it refresh my NAT and it went from open to strict. I've had a friend say he uses it to get his from strict to open.

It is both triggers and both bumpers. After running the multiplayer test in the "You're good to go" or whatever it says screen, you hold all four buttons (triggers and bumpers) and it shows a screen similar to the network detail screen and refreshes the NAT status.
-
Cool, I will check that out.
Thanks.

LOL. No. Not yet. I am going to see how it goes and try the suggestions in this thread first: http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_one_support/f/4267/t/1634443.aspx?PageIndex=2 (http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_support/xbox_one_support/f/4267/t/1634443.aspx?PageIndex=2). I just saw that post and, on the second page, it links to the xbox support page that walks through resetting your NAT table by disabling UpNp, rebooting everything, and then turning it back on and rebooting again. Ironically, I have the 5500 because I tried a similar procedure to reset the routing table on my 4300 and it stopped routing. I am sure that won't happen again though :D
-
Let us know how it goes.
I posted that information the XBL stickies in the FAQ Library (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=304.0).

Thanks. You may want to change that to say: press both triggers + both bumpers at the end of that FAQ.
-
Will do. Thank you.
-
I'd like to add that I can confirm that "Open Nat" can be achieved by just UPNP and "Energy-Saving" on the Xbox One. Keep in mind that the router MUST be rebooted after switching the Xbox One power settings or you will still get a Strict Nat type even with the triggers/bumpers method. I haven't seen any wireless problem that I know of (running WPA2 AES on the 5Ghz). However, every 3 days all devices disappear under "My Network" and I have to reboot the router to fix it. Haven't been able to find a solution yet.
-
Is "Instant On" disabled on your XB1?
I logged into the XB1 and had an open NAT last night, with Instant On enabled, no need for any reboots or clearing of routing tables. So, right now I am running on the 5500 without reserving an IP for the Xbox One and no ports forwarded for it, either. Using Instant On, I still have an open NAT. I'll report back if that changes.
-
Keep us posted... ;)

What is "instant on?"
-
What is "instant on?"
It is a setting on the Xbox One that let's it go into sleep mode and resume very quickly. 10-15 seconds instead of almost a minute to boot up. It also allows it to download software updates as soon as they are available, even if you are not using it. Oh, and to turn on when you say: "Xbox On."
BTW, furry, I just checked the One again tonight and my NAT is still open using instant on and default settings on the 5500.
-
Kewl, wonder if your lucky. Has there been any Xbox updates lately?

No. I'll post if I run into the issue again. It may have been that I knee jerk reacted to some of my friends having strict NATs and forwarded all the ports to avoid the issue on my side and the Xbox One and 5500 work better together with straight UpNp and no port forwarding.
-
Kewl, ya it should be working well with just uPnP going. Keep us posted and enjoy.
-
Any word on an updated firmware from D-Link regarding Xbox One? I know they had similar problems with other devices.
-
Apparently MS has tested the XB1 with the 5500 and 868L and both came back with OPEN NAT using defaults settings to a ISP modem (NO NAT modem) over a wired connection. There checking on the wireless connection as well. They did mention that they reviewed this thread and mentioned that we cover some of what they test. Then they give info that I posted here:
New - Xbox One Console Setup/Troubleshooting Information (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=10634.0)
If you still have the Arris modem, I would recommend checking out a Motorola SB 6 series modem and test if you can...seen odd behavior with Arris modems and D-Link routers...
187 is reporting that Instant On feature on the XB1 is working for him and he's getting OPEN NAT...

I'm curious if it's only people with multiple Xbox One's that can't get a solid OPEN NAT with "Instant-On" and the DGL-5500? For sure it does not stay as OPEN for me with my two Xbox Ones but I've never tried only 1. This is with a Motorola Surfboard Docsis 3.0 modem (don't remember exact model number) and DGL-5500. I like leaving it as energy-saving any ways saves power!

Possible, I couldn't get NAT OPEN on my friends single XB1 using 2 DIR-868Ls with Instant ON. :-\ MS i presume that there testing was with a single XB1. I don't know the specifics though.

I have 2 Xbones with instant on and open NAT.
Edit: After thinking about it, I wonder if the NAT setting is a "live" reading, there could be a possibility of it staying set and not reporting true open NAT.

I might have my friend re-enable Instant On and see how it goes. I wonder if there has been any changes to the XBL services that could effect anything.

If there is it was on the server side as there have been no console updates yet.

I presume so as we don't see any issues with 360s. :-\

I have 2 Xbones with instant on and open NAT.
Xbox One - Day One Edition directly wired to DGL-5500 - OPEN NAT with 'INSTANT ON'
Xbox 360 directly wired to DGL-500 - OPEN NAT
Xbox 360 directly wired to DIR-868L (used as an AP) - OPEN NAT (DIR-868L wired to HP Network Switch - HP Network Switch wired to HP Network Switch - HP Network Switch wired to DGL-5500)
After Santa arrives with the second Xbox One - Day One Edition, it will be directly wired to the DIR-868L (used as an AP). Once I get it set up, I will check to see if I get OPEN NAT with 'INSTANT ON'.

Thanks for sharing BS, I'm wondering if this also could be an isolated issue as well. Keep us posted on 2nd XB1 install.

Only one Xbox One in my household, but 2 360s. No NAT issues in the last week with daily gaming and instant on with default settings on the 5500. I'll post if that changes.
