And by factory reset do you mean holding down the rest button on the back for a few seconds?  Do i repeat this shortly after uploading the file or do i wait for some indication from the router?  Thanks.

The entire process shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes. There is 2 files that are numbered 1 and 2. You have to start with 1 then apply 2. I think the process should only take about 2 mins for the first file, maybe less.
Be sure you are wired to the router. Not wireless.

Forgot to mention, when doing FW updates, do the following:
Factory reset the router first.
Update using the .bin files.
Factory reset once more.
Configure router.

I prefer to use the routers web page under Tools/System however you can do the back button as well.

I guess my last question before reattempting an upgrade is whether I must upgrade to 2.03 first and THEN to 2.05.  I am currently running 2.02.

If you feel safer, by all means man. It won't hurt doing that. You'll still need to use the 2 files in sequence for v2.05 though. This would help us to show if the router is taking a upgrade correctly or not.

Just do the initial factory reset before and after you do the very last FW upgrading using the last .bin file.

Be sure you are wired. Keep us posted.
I can teamviewer and watch you at each stage before you start if you want to.

The upgrade to 2.05 seemed to go fine.  I wonder if the factory resets made the difference.  Thanks for the advice.

I do. Glad you got it loaded man. Enjoy

Some tips:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

DLink OEM FWs do not support, include or allow any client bridge modes.
Yes, set up the router from scratch after upgrading FW. Then Save the routers configuration to file after the upgrade.

I don't think the 30/30/30 works on these routers. It's possible.
Usually for FW updates or reloads I use the following:
Factory reset using the routers UI.
Upload the FW package.
Factory reset once more from the routers UI.
Don't load any prior saved config files till after testing.

I would go back and load the previous FW version. See if it works on there. If it does, remember what you did in the verification. Then reload the latest and check again. If it doesn't work. Let us know. I'll see if I can put a poker in someone ear on this.

What OS is loaded on the PC that your using? I presume thats set up to auto obtain addressing?

"Don't load any prior saved config files till after testing."

what do you mean "after testing"? I upload the config file (the previous settings) after F/W upgrade to be able to start the testing, otherwise have to start the router setup from scratch - is that what you imply?

Success! ;D ;D ;D The 30/30/30 method does work on the B1 version of this router. It appears to wipe the old firmware and go into a firmware loader mode. From the screen after a 30/30/30 reset, all you can do is upload firmware to the router, no passwords or pretty screen, just a “browse” file button and a “upload” file button and some basic warnings and instructions. No internet access, so you need to already have the firmware on your machine before doing the 30/30/30 reset. I did NOT try to restart the router, I just uploaded the 2.05NA firmware(both files!).

It works, no major signal increase on WiFi, but I have NOT tried 5Ghz yet, only 2.4Ghz wireless. DHCP for IPV4 and 6 are PERFECT, I did a brief security test, closed tight! The Diplexer for dual bands must be attenuating the signal or the radios just don’t pump out as much power as the DIR-655. Oh well, I think this one is still a keeper! Routing to my server on the 1Gbps back bone is solid, as it was before the upgrade.

So after a full day 3 months ago, and failure! All that was needed was a solid reset. Total time today, including reconnecting the wireless clients, 90 minutes.

I will beat it to death, if I find any problems, I will repost here!

Patrick glad to hear you've nailed it. Can you tell me on the top of your head if the d-link firmware allows to set the router in client-bridge mode (like with the WRT firmware)?
