My DIR-655 constantly blocks outgoing ICMP packets from my Linksys PAP2T device.  I have tried buying new phone adapters, changing router settings, tried troubleshooting with Callcentric (my internet phone service company), tried resetting the router, and upgrading the firmware, but this router just will not behave.  It seems to have a mind of its own.  I have even opened DMZ to the device, and the router still blocks packets.  I thought DMZ was suppose to let free traffic flow from and to the device across the internet just as if it did not have to pass through the router.

Is there any way to get this router to behave?  I am about to go try a Linksys router.

Following is from my router log:

[Using DIR-655 Hardware Version A3, Firmware Version 1.32NA]

DMZ has nothing to do with ping.

For that you need to go to Advanced > Advanced Network

Under WAN PING put a checkmark in Enable WAN Ping Respond.

Ironically, I have the same Dlink 655, Linksys PAP2T, and Callcentric service, and do not see this problem.

DMZ is only for incoming, if you have any outgoing traffic blocked or securespot enabled I would try not doing that.

What does WAN PING have to do with the router blocking outgoing ICMP packets?  Are you saying that I need to enable WAN PING in order to make the router work with my Linksys VOIP adapter?

Securespot was enabled, but I was not using it.  I have disabled it now to see if that fixes the problem.

What hardware and firmware version are you using?  I think that I was fine prior to upgrading my firmware.  I am using 1.32NA and Hardware Version A3.  If we are on the same firmware, I wonder if you would be willing to save your configuration and send it to me.

Unfortunately, it appears I AM having the problem now too. Now I am unsure if I just missed it because the log was otherwise full, or had not waited long enough before. Sorry for misleading you.

Now I am running 1.33NA the beta.

Currently, I have 5060-5080 opened to the PAP2T and I see the following errors. Yet, the phone service seems to be working OK.   I won't share my config file, but you can ask anything about it you want.

Question is: Are we chasing a non-problem here?

My phone calls over VOIP appear to be fine most of the time, but there are intermittent problems and I believe they are related to the router blocking these outgoing packets.  Today I had two people tell me that it sounded like somebody was pressing a button on the phone every 10 seconds.  Sometimes people tell me they have a terrible echo or delay.  Sometimes the calls just drop for no apparrent reason, like when a cell phone drops from losing a signal.  When I test the phone by calling it on my cell phone, it sounds fine.  Sometimes I go for weeks without people telling me anything odd.  I have been through Callcentric support, and they blame the D-Link router, which they say often have problems with their service.  The router log consistently shows that it blocks outgoing ICMP packets.

Officemax has a Linksys router on sale.  I had switched from Linksys to D-Link because I liked the IP reservation system on the D-Link router.  Now it appears that Linksys offers that too on their new modems, so maybe I will switch back and try the Linksys to see if it works better.
