UPnP randomly stops working w/ FW 1.33NA
« on: February 07, 2010, 08:16:35 PM »

I have Azureus/Vuze as a P2P client and it can test, more accurately than most, whether or not ports are properly opened.  Normally, this isn't a problem, but after 1.33NA, UPnP will go down and the router has to be restarted.  I may downgrade to 1.31NA like I did from 1.32NA, but what do you guys think?  Anyone else having the same issue?  I have the UPnP service, etc. marked as automatic in Windows 7 HP x64.

Hi,

Is UPnP enabled in the router ?  If so, try disable it and reboot the router.

I use µTorrent and UPnP works fine with the latest firmware on Win 7 Pro 64.

The UPnP Device Host service should be set to manual as it starts automatically when needed then shuts back down when not needed anymore.

Yeah, but I'll give that a try, anyway.

I had always heard to make it automatic for best results, but I'll give setting it back to manual a try.

Thanks for the replies.

I tried all of the suggested things and for whatever reason, I cannot get UPnP to work anymore.  I even tried downgrading, which didn't work at all, either, which is odd.  The only thing that works for me now is complete port forwarding.  Kind of a pain...

I find it hard to believe that UPnP is not working. Are you running any antivirus software on that machine?

Are you sure it is not Vuze?

Maybe try another client like µTorrent.

Since UPnP is all software/firmware and not a single piece hardware it can't be a broken router. I think you should have a look at the client's services (UPnP device host, SSDP service)

Yes, N360.  I've tried fiddling with permissions, network trust, etc., including cutting off all antivirus and firewall protection.  Still the same.

Are you sure it is not Vuze?

Maybe try another client like µTorrent.

I've tried µTorrent in the past, but for whatever reason, I get that nag screen whenever I add a torrent.  The developers couldn't figure out why and refused to drop the nag screen, so I dropped µTorrent.  I also like the built-in transcoding engine for my PS3, which brings me to the next thing below.

I'm beginning to suspect something wrong with this, actually.  My PS3 would normally run slower than dirt without UPnP, but I started it up today and it says UPnP is available and I don't experience any lags.  That would suggest that UPnP may be fine as far as the firmware is concerned.

Unfortunately, that brings me to my software.  I uninstalled Vuze, reinstalled; uninstalled the specific UPnP plugin, reinstalled.  I guess it could still theoretically be Vuze, but I'm not sure.  Then there's also the actual UPnP services in Windows 7 Home Premium.  I've checked them, disabled them, restarted them, set them to automatic, set them to manual, etc.  I still get the same results.  I've run CHKDSK, sfc /scannow, etc. to see if there's any OS corruption, but they don't turn up anything.  I'm running of ideas, guys.  There's got to be something I'm overlooking or not trying somewhere down the line.  Keep the replies coming.  I really appreciate the help.

What nag screen?

I have never seen any nag screen in µTorrent.

Did you download from µTorrent site or somewhere else?

Hve you tried enabling logging in vuze?

Then check the log to see what the problem is:
Plugins > Log Views > UPnP

Also, make sure you have entries for Vuze in the Windows Firewall as even though you are using UPnP you still have to have entries in the firewall.

Yeah, there's one when you first install µTorrent that says something to the effect of "This program is freeware, if you paid for it you have been scammed..".  Every time I add a torrent (I always close µTorrent when I'm done, so it starts up again after adding) I get the above message.  I had this issue when I still had Vista and I still have it with Windows 7.

Downloading from official site or 3rd party?

I have tested this over and over but can not duplicate what you are posting about.

I think buddy has issues differentiating legit software and sources from malicious ones. Wouldn't be suprised if his entire system is FUBAR.

utorrent doesn't display that "nag" screen.

The nag screen is shown when Windows has marked the exe as untrusted.

You can see this by right clicking on the exe and then properties and you will see an "unlock" button.

Does not happen every time though and yes it is very annoying.

It's been like this for years:

http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=9397

Of course it is "suppose" to be shown only once but it's not. I get it like evey 10 runs or so, but never every 10, so it's random.

Are you using an old version?

The algorithm that checks for this has been changed as of the 1.8 builds.

Also, µTorrent 2.0 was just released recently.

Not sure why but the only time I have ever seen this was years ago after the first install.
Since then I just import my setting when I install.
