Can't Install This Router
« on: February 08, 2010, 01:39:39 PM »

I am having no luck installing this router at all.  I am running Windows 7 64 bit.  I have a hp 802.11b/g wireless network adapter on the computer.  After using the setup disc after everything is finished it said it was a successful setup.  It is not finding the network I created and my wireless adapter had an X through it and I tried to diagnose but it would not repair it.  I went into Device Manager and uninstalled the adapter then rebooted but it still wont work.  I am really getting frustrated.  My old Netgear router installed with no trouble at all.  Anyone have any steps or ideas that can guide me?  Thanks in advance for the help.

Have you tried going into the router setup pages to verify all is like you want it to be?

I never use those discs for router setup.

Default IP for setup is at: http://192.168.0.1/

I'm not sure what the settings should be!!!  LOL  I previously had a Netgear WGR614 and installation and setup for that was a breeze I didn't have to change anything.  After installing the DIR-655 my wireless network adapter does not work so it can't connect to the network.  This is frustrating beypnd belief!!!

When you say your wireless network adapter does not work what exactly doesn't work? You can't connect to the D-Link router using your old settings for SSID and encryption. Look for D-Link or what ever the default SSID is for the new router in your list of available wireless networks. Connect and then log into the router to setup your wireless the way you want it. Another option is to connect with a cable, log in and then do the setup.

What I mean is the wireless adapter is basically disables (it has a red x). I try diagnose but that doesn't fix it.  I did set it up with a cable. I unhooked the D-Link and hooked the Netgear router back up and everything works fine.  I have tried resetting the cable modem and the D-Link router but I just can't access the Network I created during setup.

You have to hook up the router then powercycle your modem so it obtains the new LAN IP from the router.

Before doing this you may wish to reset the router to defaults (push and hold in button on back) then you can look for SSID dlink. After you can access the web setup you can then change SSID/security.

Did you try running the Windows Wireless Network Connection Wizard?

Hi hanginghelmet,

Remove all wires coming and going from your Cable Modem and D-Link Router, including the Power Cable from the Outlet, not from the unit itself, because you can blow either the Router or Cable Modem by plugging the Cable Power Cord into the wrong Device.

Insert the CD that came with your D-Link Router. Run it. Follow its onscreen instructions for reconnecting everything.

What you posted in the quote, tells me that the D-Link Router is not registered with the Cable Modem, but the NetGear Router is.

You want to first setup the router using a computer that is wired to it.  Make your Internal network and setup the wireless portion.  Once it ia all set up then try to connect to it with the wireless.

This is a no go. The wireless won't connect.  I called tech support and after an hour of trying they said they had done all they can do.  I'm very disappointed

Log into the router manually though a wired connection. Then verify that the wireless is enabled, the SSID is not hidden, and the mode is B,G & N and not just N.

I have already tried that and the wireless does not work.  I have an internet connection to the computer that the router is wired to but no wireless.  It says my wireless network adapter is not connected.

Are you using the same SSID and security key that the other router had?

I am thinking your adapter may need to be setup again in Windows if you have changed the SSID and/or security.
