When will we get a new firmware update?
« on: February 10, 2010, 07:26:22 AM »

I have had my unit over 1 year and I havent seen any significant firmware upgrade since 1.06

When will we see an update that is official?

Clearly this product is not supported well post sale!

Out of curiosity - why do you equate the lack of "significant firmware upgrade(s)" with "post sale support".

For the sake of discussion - let's say a firm were to introduce a NAS, with a well developed stable, bugfree operating system (assuming such a thing were possible), why should they offer any "upgrade" whatsoever?

For the sake of discussion - let's say a firm were to introduce a NAS, with a well developed stable, reasonably bugfree operating system (assuming such a thing were possible), they might offer firmware updates to correct any bugs that were discovered, but why should they offer any firmware "upgrade" whatsoever?

When you bought the DNS-323, you knew what features D-Link advertised it as having, what makes you think you are entitled to more?

Now - to discuss post sale support - for the most part I've had very few reasons to contact D-Link's tech support team, and on those few occasions it has been done by email, and I find them courteous and responsive and if I might say so, a lot more prompt than those of their competitors whom I have had the need to contact.  In fact, the only network equipment manufacturer who has been more prompt & helpful than D-Link has been Cisco (and I don't mean Linksys by Cisco).

Mind you - I'm not giving D-Link a clear pass here - this thing still has bugs that I think should have been fixed years ago - but - my point is, you're not entitled to upgrades, and post sale support is in no way linked to said upgrades.

In addition, although there are things that I'd like to see changed, the unit performs the function it's advertised to do. :)

hey gunrunner, you mention in your last post that the unit performs the functions it's advertised to do.  I purchased this strictly for 1 central location for all my pictures, music and movies for my network.  i had it set up with 2 separate volumes and wanted disk 2 to backup disk 1 with incremental backups since there wasn't much change on a daily basis.  this does not work and has been reported many times so it doesn't work as advertised.

other annoyances such as the upnp server, yes it does work, but to have to wait hours sometimes for something to show up on the ps3 is crazy when other products can have it there in 2-3 min, and you normally have to hit manual refresh on the 323 to get it up there ...

so having this said that's why people are getting frustrated with this device, i love the price point of it and if it did exactly as advertised then it wouldn't a problem

D-Link should have the resources to put out a firmware quicker then over a year.  In the meantime i have purchased another NAS from a competitor back in August and have already seen 2 firmware updates since then, this to address bug fixes and with enhancements

we were also told it was going to be in released in july 2009, sure we can't for see issues with the firmware right away but we are now 7 months later and Dlink still doesn't have the problems sorted out ... just doesn't seem like a lot of support for the advertised features, never mind the enhancements, why don't they stop working on the shareport package that is supposed to be released with 1.08 and get the other stuff working first ... i love the idea of the shareport by the way, it will make the device a lot better but again not an original advertised feature as to why i purchased the unit

just my thoughts

hey gunrunner, just out of curiosity, i don't believe you work for Dlink so you won't know what is going on behind the scenes but what does soon mean to you, you mention that 1.08 will be released soon, so within a few days, weeks, months, etc?

1.08 has already been approved as final. So....soon. When all ECN's are released and the full 1.08 package is ready to go it will be uploaded to the site.

Hey D-Link Multimedia ... thanks for the update, but again soon, what does that mean?  Also I am not sure if it was you or ECF that quoted July 2009 but either way you both represent D-Link and it is 7 months later so only time will tell i guess ...

Any further firmware updates planned after 1.08?

To Klein, yes it was me. We had some development set backs which took way longer than expected.

To Aibo,

Yes I am actually planning to release a beta firmware and addon tomorrow adding our new Cloud Backup service. It is the exact same code as 1.08 final with the addition of the Online backup. Beyond that addition we will be focusing most of our efforts at updating our other 2 boxes and other development efforts.

I find it impressive that DLink staff are here to answer questions and give us some idea of what to expect on the firmware front.
Overall am quite happy with my DNS-323, and aside from the nightmares of early days with 2nd drive install wiping 1st drive, which I think the newer firmware addresses, I can't complain at all.
The device is stable, solid and does not heat up.
With funplug you can even control fan better and keep device sleeping when not in use more frequently.

Lots to love here, keep up the good work. (I have no connection with nor own stock in d-link! Just have 2-3 devices)

I'm curious about this statement.  Exactly how does fun_plug fix hibernation?
