DGL-4500 Shareport Utlity Connection.
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:16:26 AM »

Okay, I called dlink support and had asked them about why my external storage device was not connecting using the dlink shareport utility. Since I am using the latest firmware of the shareport 1.10 firmware on my windows 7 x64 pc. They recommended that I needed to update to the latest firmware version 1.22NA. So, I did what they said and downloaded the latest firmware 1.22NA. Now the external storage device is connecting successfully. However, as the day progressed. I am now experiencing an unknown reboot on DGL-4500, when it happens I loose internet connection for a brief moment until it reboots completely. Then I notice when I go into router configuration utility that the Time has been reset as well, but none of my other settings ie: wifi and security settings has not been reset. It almost seems to be a soft reboot out of the ordinary for brief moment then it will get back on line. Has anyone experience this issue ?

seems like there could be an issue with the router, some of us are using v1.22NA and have not seen this reboot issue since it was supposed to fix the re-boot and hang issue that was seen in v1.21NA. However I don't use the shareport function so I wonder if this could be a cause. Yes it should not do this either way. Have you used the router with out the USB device connected to the port? Did you perform a Factory Reset after you did the FW update? What ISP service do you use? Cable or DSL? I to use Windows 7 x64 and enjoy this router. Let us know.

I'm on 1.22NA and I'm still getting reboots. However, they are nowhere near as frequent as older 1.20 versions.

What is the firmware of the router before you upgrade it to 1.22NA?

Okay, well.....after the weekend has gone by. I have yet again beginning to notice that once I plug my Seagate Freedeskstar external hard drive to the usb in the back of the DGL-4500. It may be the culprit of this great router. When being plugged into the usb. It will connect via the shareport utility but leaving it connected for a long period of time may be the issue, causing the router to reboot and or resetting the router time configuration, that's just my two cents....However, I did chat with Seagate and they recommended that I plug the Seagate Freedeskstar external hard drive directly into the computer, which was detected successfully. Also too....when using the shareport utility and trying to connect to external hard drive....the shareport utility will show it as " Available " but will still not connect to unless I go into the router configuration page and do soft reboot. Then it will connect to the external hard successfully using the shareport utility. Before any of this had happend I did notice in Windows Device Manager that there was a yellow caution sign in "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".

I would make contact with a moderator on here, Lycan or Sesca and report this issue with them or call DLink and let them know this information. See if there is any other resolution. However connecting any USB device is preferred to a PC that can share the device out. I have a 2TB USB drive connected to my fileserver. Works great. If your seeing Yellow marks in Device Manager, means the drivers for this device is not installed correctly or could be a HW problem as well. The Device Manger should always be clear of any marks.

I am aware of the Device Manager being cleared of any marks, and the drivers are working as they should. It only happens when Dlink shareport utility and the external hard drive meet connection. Once its connected fully and successfully for a long duration that is when the router time configuration is reset and possibly non-reconnection of the external hard drive will give the Device Manager a yellow caution stating that the device can not start, once the hardware has been disconnected from the shareport utility.

But I will contact the moderators about these issues I am experiencing.

Let us know what you find out from the Mod's. Seems like if its going to be connected to the router, it shouldn't be causing the router to re-boot automatically.  :-\

If you read my threads, I was getting the same thing.  If by chance you are using the drive when it does that reset, it crashes the computer.  I posted it in the shareport forum though, and didn't mention the router reboots, as I didn't notice them right away since my PC was crashed.  However, I can confirm this is exactly what happens, the router does in fact reset itself, as all other users on the network lose internet briefly, and the display panel on top goes bright...

Okay, I have called dlink support yesterday and they gave me a Reference #ALR400781781. Here is what we have discussed. I ran the whole scenario down with what is causing my issue with the shareport utility and DGL-4500. They told me to go into the router configuration page and make sure that the multicast stream was " checked " enabled, which is was not at the time, so I went ahead and enabled it by placing the check into the box and selecting "save settings" and then do a " reboot ". After we did the reboot they mention if windows 7 was able to allow the shareport utility into windows firewall, so we check to see if that was an issue....I opened up windows firewall and looked under the " inbound rules" and they told me to look for the two " SharePort Utitity " rules and the one " SXUPTP " which they were there. Once located they responded back and told me to select the Properties of each rule pertaining to the shareport utility and to go to the Advance Tab and under the Profiles section they asked what was enabled by a check in the three boxes,  "Domain.....Private.....Public" I told them only one box checked and that was the Private box. So, they told me to put a check into the "Public" and hit the Apply button. Doing so for the other two inbound settings the same.  Then after we have configured the windows firewall. We went into the infamous " SharePort Utility " to check for settings as well. They then tell  me to select the " Options " button that looks like a "wrench" in the shareport utility. So I did, and to choose the tab " Search For Device Servers " and put a check inside the box that is labeled " Enable broadcast addresses " and use this address: " 192.168.0.255 " and click on the " Add button " and choose Apply. After we gone through  all the configurations they said to go ahead and insert the external hard drive into shareport utility in the back of the router making sure it is plugged in all the way and to test out the connection between the router and the external hard drive. The router and storage drive was connected successfully (yesterday) , and so the Technician and I parted ways.

Leaving in a state of mind thinking everything is working flawlessly now! I was wrong. Today March 2, 2010 is a new day. I started up my computer and felt like backing up important data onto my external hard drive. I started up the infamous " SharePort Utility " to connect to my back up drive. And what do you know.....It is not connecting once again. I keep getting the " Available " status in the sharepot utility. So wanted to make sure if the router settings running fine, so i checked the Time on router and I found that the time settings is correct. At least one good thing is working!!! Now I'm going to call back Dlink support, and let them know of my situation at hand.

Okay that was a quicky !!! I called them back and let be aware of my issue that I have recently obtain on a new day. They told to me to do quick reboot on my desktop and to take the power cord out of the router for 1 minute and to plug it back into the router and log back into windows and run the shareport utility to connect to the storage device and it worked successfully once again.

I guess I will have to wait till the next update of the firmware for the shareport utility and or dgl-4500 updates....Over all I think the router is running fine without the shareport utility....but it seems to be a big issue for everyone.

Ya have seen others with the same issue. I would just connect the external drive to the desktop or a server on a free USB port, share it out if needed and call it good. Hope DLink will address this. I presume they are trying too. Let us know how this goes. Sorry for not getting a stable resolution.
